The 1957 Dope Dauphine

Yep, I ran 6v on 12v system for about 4 years, it’ll just spin up like modern starter, ie fast, rather than chugga chugga...

Radiator panels done, made from 1mm ali so it was easy for me to work with and pliable. Alot of it is riveted together so I could get it in and around pipes and such. Painted black to hide how bad it looks but it should do. Alot better than my temporary mock up when testing. I might use some ali tape to cover up some small gaps to make sure the air is trying to only go through the rad.

So where are we up to.... the thing spins bloody fast on 12v like it almost seems too fast but the 6v coil seems to hate it. As in the car misfires like fook then dies and the coil is too hot to touch in seconds. Spare campus alternator that was a little bent out of shape has been thrown on for now and a few little tweaks to the wiring have been made. All seems to be working well electrically. The 12v to 6v reducer has been wired in to run the oil pressure light, water temp, fuel gauge and alternator light and looks to be working fine, as in the light goes out and I still have the same amount of fuel on the dash. I've popped a few 6v bulbs but took a run out to halfrauds to get some today. 12v indicator bulbs thrown in and some led front side lights. The rear bulbs I'm collecting tomorrow at the same time as the 12v coil and the headlights have been ordered. I've gone for 12v versions of the yellow ones I already have. Hopefully all being well I can give it a test drive tomorrow and check that the engine stays at a reasonable temperature 🤞

New bosch 12v coil slapped on this afternoon, and into life she fired. I ordered it through ecp for a classic beetle, turned up listed for some BMW but a quick google of the main part number showed it was the 12v non ballasted coil that i needed. A quick once over to make sure all looked ok and the fan cut and worked and i took it for a test drive. A little tentative to start with but the needle got no where near the danger zone. The laser probe also showing the temp staying low. The ali panelling, decent quality rad and 12v fan all working wonders it would seem. I had a nice 50mph cruise to a garage to make sure the tire pressures were all good and a nice run home. I need to put some miles on her now but fingers crossed all is good and i can start using her for some decent runs out.
