tappets/ cambelt help please

oil change wud be my 1st port of call tbh, maybe an engine flush aswell with forte or similar, changing tappets straight away if its only just started tapping is a little extreme!

but thats the thing the car didnt tap at all not 1 sound, i turned it off next day started it and it sounds like a tractor had full oil i dont get it. i dont wanna waste my time putting good oil init to start it and it sound sthe same because i will have the right hump.

weird, tappets tend to wear slowly and gradually get louder, most noticably on cold start up, that sounds like something else. how loud is it and have you listened to exactly where in the engine the sound is coming from?

yea its tapping from the tappets. the was sitting for about 5 months the battery on it was non existant so u cuddnt say the guy warmed it up lol, i said aswell gonna get it started so i no what it sounds like and it was sweet as a nut got it home parked it up there wasnt much oil in it so put a liter in (im not driving the car) next day i went out started the engine and it taps like an old sierra lol no word of a lie it sounds terrible realy loud tapping, sounds like it has not 1 drop of oil in it dipstick is at max. its baffeled me because tappets normall go over time and u hear gradualy untill its loud this was non existant to extram tapping baffled.

start it, and leave it running, see if the noise goes, cud be a sticky one or summit and shud clear, and for the sake of an oil change (20 quid or so if u buy cheap oil) its well worth as a starting point rather than ripping the engine apart

i no what your saying i let it run and it didnt go i will definatly try again. it just dosent make any scense does it to be nothing then a proper tap. would a sticky/stuck valve sound like this then. should i add one of those stop tap hydraulic additives to it thats cleans them. also if i let it run am i just dammaging them even further. ?

forgot to add, car needs a cambelt doing anyway. do i have to remove the engine to do these jobs, or can it be done in the car ?

yep i totally agree, dont buy the cheapest oil though, get something half decent like 5-40 fully synth or 0-40 fully synth.

can be done in car, its fiddly but do-able for the cam belt

still worth trying an additive ai, like u said anti tap one or summit, if it is just a sticky tappet it shud free up. without hearing it tho its difficult to tell what damage, if any you are doing!

because some1 told me once its tapped the damage is done. its a loud tap aswell TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP constant i need to investigate, if they are gone its only £60 for a set. im realy hoping there not, but i need to investigate, inmo it sounds fucked lol tappy wise. no smoke either by the way if this means anything, exhause is clean just sounds really loud and tappy.

to be honest, id say atleast 1/2 the people on here have tapety engines, its how they go and most people just go with it.  make sure its warmed up before you go and thrash it though ;)

i think its ok it sits just about over half betwen 3 and 6 and goes up if you rev it is this ok ??

Obviuosly I cant hear you engine runnin so this is just a suggestion but could it be a noisy injector.

One of mine, especially when cold, makes a tapping/knocking noise.

Other than that its gotta be worth some oil treatment - then have a look if its still noisy when changin the cambelt.

Yeah that's normal.

Try some additive stuff to see if it quietens the tappets down, also check your oil, not the level, but how old it is.

Take it out for a spin just to get the oil flowing round the engine and see if it quietens down as well.

ok today i went out popped the bonnet to notice that all the rocker cover bolts were only finger tight so i tightened them all up and let the car run, it was still tappin so i punched the rocker cover and the tap stopped not completly, but then turned it off went out came abck later started it again it it was tapping bad again so i jacked it up as the car got to a certain point the tapping just completely 100% stopped wierd.
