Speeding fines are to rise.......

Speeding Fines Rise Dramatically For Most Serious Offenders

"Typically, Band A, B and C fines punish motorists. Travelling at between 31mph and 40mph in a 30mph zone is a Band A fine, for example, which equates to 50% weekly income. Reaching 41mph to 50mph in the same speed limit zone is Band B, which is 100% of weekly income. Hitting 51mph or more is Band C and equates to 150%."

According to the write up, even if one is 1 mph above the designated speed limit, legally, one may be fined up to 50% of one's weekly income, up to a set maximum limit, so looks like the "10% + 2 mph above speed limit" soft rule is out the window. [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

From reading other articles, the way I interpret the media circus is that the value of fines are increasing to send a message, not that they are going to be change any of the tolerances from what they currently.

The average speeding fine is something poultry at the moment like £180, which the sentencing council do not think is harsh enough to deter speeding.

I didn't think the number of points has changed, only the fines associated with each 'misdemeanour'........or have they?

The Sentencing Council Bands, related speed limits and the percentage of income drivers can soon be fined are confirmed below.

Speed Limit In MPH Band A - Vehicle Speed in MPH (50% Weekly Income) Band B - Vehicle Speed in MPH (100% Weekly Income) Band C - Vehicle Speed in MPH (150% Weekly Income)
limit Band A Band B Band C
20 21 - 30 31 - 40 41+
30 31 - 40 41 - 50 51+
40 41 - 55 56 - 65 66+
50 51 - 65 66 - 75 76+
60 61 - 80 81 - 90 91+
70 71 - 90 91 - 100 101+

Drivers that speed face further, existing, repercussions such as penalty points – which tend to increase the price of motor insurance - and temporary licence suspension. Band A equates to 3 points, Band B from 4 to 6 points (or the 7 to 28 day disqualification), and Band C is 6 points (or the 7 to 56 day ban).

Indeed Simon, but I thought that number of points allocated (for Bands A, B & C) were exactly the same as before (I.e. only the fines are to be increased). If this is the case then the impact, via raised insurance premiums, is likely to be the same as it is today, but the overall financial penalty will be much higher when you look at the cumulative effect of the higher fine + the increase to the following year's premium.
