Sometimes won't start

Hi guys, happy new year to you all. Having now sorted all the teething problems: brand new wheels, (Colin G's) new tyres, new track rods and track rod ends across whole back end, and have covered 2500 miles in 4 weeks in all weathers, I love my vee. However got one tiny issue that makes me smile, because of the quirks of these cars. When I start the car if I flick the accelerator then she starts without fail, however 1 in 10 times she just winds over, mainly at petrol stations (slightly embarrassing) so I play it cool and get out of car and go to garage and pay for some mints (playing for time) and go back after 3 mins and she starts perfectly. Is this? Fuel filter, fuel pump or something else? Any clues would help thanks..

I occasionally had this happen to me a couple of years ago, I changed the fuel filter myself (quite an easy job) and I haven't had the issue since. Can't guarantee it will solve the issue you are having but it might be worth a shot.

One similar problem I found with the 182 ( when I had it ) turned over without starting then after about 10 seconds the battery lost it's juice and would struggle. Turns out the battery was on its way out and somehow didn't disengage the immobiliser on the car, turned over but wouldn't fire. New battery sorted it :approve:

^^^ I've always been surprised that 'battery replacement' doesn't feature prominently on service scheduled. They certainly lose their efficacy after 5 years. In the cold weather they perform even less efficiently. My late friend, a former AA man, once told me that battery issues were his biggest cause of call outs.

Cost of AA home start for 5 years vs replacement battery?
...go figure!

I must admit that even though the battery seems strong, when the problem of not starting the car became a worry I did used to sit a wind over and over until the battery was nearly dead, I knew enough to go no further a wait otherwise I would had needed to call out AA, but now I just wait for 3/5 mins and she starts as normal, however the fault does act like an immobiliser fault. The fuel filter is cheaper than battery so I will change that first anyway and see. Thanks for clues

On the 172/182 its also a common fault that the tdc/crankshaft sensor are causing symptoms like you described.
Theres even an uprated version available from renault as they are failing pretty often (its like coils on the vee)

...but afaik its not a common fault on the vee.
But might be worth to check via OBD if there are any errors saved on your ECU.

I changed the tdc/crankshaft sensor last year in May and it still did not cure the starting problem.

I get the same symptoms of the engine turning over but not starting like there is no fuel or ignition when you start for the first time with a cold engine. It always takes a second go with a bit of input on the gas pedal. To top it off it does that with a hot (not warm) engine too!
