5 GT Turbo Something for the weekend... again...

Eh up chaps.

Prob time to let the cat out of the bag... good old Matty (Jesus) persuaded me to buy another r5 some time ago.

Spent a while sorting the rust and cleaning the old girl up ready for paint. She was stripped and had spent a decade or so in the back corner of a body shop collecting overspray and dust, partially stripped with a load of bits missing.

She went off to an amazing body shop (same place that did the job on my Gold VW T6 Autohaus, which was featured in a few magazines etc, reminded me of Dawson’s back in the day 😆)...

She’s back now and having a full bare shell resto, every nut and bolt, widget and clip. Having had the seats sorted with all new bolsters, foams and covers I’ve honestly never sat in a 5 that feels so good, only pain is you don’t sink into the seats and being tall I hit the roof 😆😆😆 never had that before! Anyway, it should be ready in a few weeks. I’ll sort some pics and add them up when I manage to drive my inter web better 🤦🏼‍♂️😆

Also got my eye on a potential new rally car R5 project for those that might remember my old one.... I heard bob might have put mine back together for sale (minus alot of special parts) but not seen anything firm yet.

Anyway, in the mean time the drive has now got three more r5s on it... seems I got the bug again....

OOOF!! That's truly spanktastic @Alastair !!! Great work sir, a real credit to you!! My clean Raider crown has a well deserved new owner!!

I can see in the not too distant future, my Raider will need a freshen up to keep it in the game.. I managed to uncover it from a lot of the sh1t that's on it over the weekend. Didn't yet pull the cover off and see what's happening underneath.. I fear it will be a little like yours having been sat there with all the overspray and stuff going on in the garage recently with the old Clio & R11 Restorations.

I'd recommend you change that water pump before it goes back in the car.. Looks a little furred up.

Haha thanks Steve but there’s a long way to go yet!

The tin worm digging wasn’t fun, and there was plenty of small repairs that I hadn’t thought it would need before the paint and that just swallowed time and cash. Fortunately the front turrets were way better than I thought they would be inside, as that could have been a major headache, along with the inner sills and screen. The shell had fared very well compared to some nails I’ve had in the past.

Also got a new water pump assembly ready to go on 👍🏻I’ve Been waiting for deliveries, but good spot lol 😆

To be fair the worst thing has been brackets and stuff, everything was seized, corroded out beyond repair or just a bloody mess.

Renault LOVE a good bracket, or captive well nut, why have 1 bracket when 5 bolted together will do??? By the time you’ve taken a mostly/partly OE engine bay and put it right you can easily spend a couple of £k before you’ve even plated or powder coated anything, the expense is way more than I’d planned, scary even, and certainly 5 figures with paint plus welding and parts without any labour so far 🤦🏼‍♂️. Still, I’d always wanted a ‘new’ raider so it has to be done 😆looking forward to a drive out in it!
