Smell whilst driving...

Noticed something strange tonight, now I'm well used to the usual Vee aroma, and I really like it, but tonight was different, whilst driving along and mainly when accelerating hard there was a pungent gassy oily smell, this only happened with the drivers window down, and went away when driving gently. With the window up there was nothing at all, it was a real nasty smell the kind that also gets in your mouth and you can taste...

Never had this before at all so was wondering if anyone had had similar?

I did consider clutch but soon dismissed it because the clutch seems absolutely fine, no slipping and none of that rotten cabbage smell that usually comes from a knackered clutch..

I'll have to have a look underneath, engine was out in January for belts etc and it was fine when I've driven it last week.. Strange indeed.

Have they overfilled the gearbox? gear oil smell? if overfull pushes out the breather pipe onto exhaust and very smelly when pushing on! Just ring and ask them if they used the dip stick(special tool) or filled to the hole in the side of the box!

Strange I had the same thing on Sunday. Smell started whilst sitting in traffic. I've since checked underneath and it looks like I have an oil leak. Just got to locate it!

Where abouts did you notice the leak mate? Was it dropping onto the ground or onto the trays? Everything's so covered up on these cars...

I'll get them to look into it Simon, good shout. It's due an MOT this month so the perfect opertunity.

I didn't notice it until I stopped at home And noticed a drip on my driveway. It seems to have stopped now the engine is cold. Never had it before. I'll have to try and check underneath but as you say everything is hard to get to.

Mine is the opposite. The occupant is the smelliest component and I have to drive everywhere with the window open. I should probably take a bath...
: )

Mines smelt from the day I bought it! I can't really drive with the window down...

You collecting dead rats as well?

If the oil is arriving on the near side, chances are that it is from the breather pipe on the box, made worse if it is dropped down, gear oil has a very distinct aroma :approve:

I had same I asked Scott about it and he said - use your air conditioning. I always drive with window open - Scott advised to always drive with windows closed as if you have window down it changes the air flow to the engine - mine only smells oily with window down and Scotts advice was spot on as usual !! no smell in cabin when windows closed !! Well done Scott !!
