rt to 16v conversion

G

Guest

im getting tired of the questions about converting a RT to 16V. this is a simple guide of things you need and roughly how to do it.
REMEMBER THAT THIS CONVERSION SHOULD BE DECLARED TO AUTHORITIES AND IS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
IF YOU DO NOT DECLARE IT, THIS SITE OR ANYONE ON IT WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY TROUBLE YOU GET INTO!!!!

right here goes

for the conversion u need:

engine (complete one)
gearbox
engine loom
dash loom
rear end wiring(fuel pump wiring)
16v calipers, disks and pads
dash clocks(speedo and oil dials)
driveshafts but rt or 1.9D ones will be fine
phase 1 ecu
uprated suspension or just 16v shocks and springs(needed to handle weight of engine etc)
16v radiator
16v dog bone mount(rt one will wear out too quick)
16v downpipe and exhaust system(a rt cat and system will fit on a 16v downpipe as a temporary measure)
Top engine mount(all parts)

think thats everything(anyone feel free to add anything else that i have forgotten)

to start with, its simple to remove the old engine but rememeber:

undo gear selector rod from the gearbox so it wont need setting up again
the slam panel cannot be unbolted from the rt shell so its a tighter fit to get engine in
put rad in after, i found it easier and gave more room to manouver engine
bonnet will rub on inlet manifold so will need a small section grinded out from bonnet frame to prevent this( unless you use a 16v bonnet)

Rt fuel pump is sufficent enough to run 16v engine, also with no reserve tank and second pump, this is a loss of weight already

ideally change fuel lines as rt are not high pressure lines so i have been told

When you say "authorities" do you mean the insurance company and DVLA where applicable? ..... I'm sure authorities means the police ...

sorry yeah the insurance aand dvla. when i wrote it i couldnt thinkj what dvla were called lol

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the idea behind this conversion?

Is it a case of rescuing the engine from a damaged valver, or is there another source of the same engine from some other renault model, ie creating a 'new' valver?

its a case of more power for RT and RL owners. the questions come up all the time so thought i would make a type of guide about what is needed etc. the engine could come from a willy, valver or 1.8 16v ren 19. doesnt have to be a damaged vehicle

Not forgetting to mention, it's also possible to use the F4R or the Clio 172/182 engines too

very true but its not as easy and most people will struggle with rewiring and mating looms
