RENAULT FUEGO TURBO 1984

Car finally arrived at my garage, many thanks to the excellent Urban Logistics transporters - highly recommended.

Got 6 month rental on garage premises - first opened in 1923 and closed in 2005.

Amazing time capsule.

Work starts

FUEGO 17 004.webp On attempting to change the spark plugs I found they were connected to an extender - see pic.
The plugs are very deep set - wondering if there is an alternative to these and if not where can I find replacements.
Any advice most welcome.
Alan

Hi, these are the same on my R5 Gordini, did you use a long box spanner that went over the top of the extenders? Like the one below, not necessary your plug size but same principle? You can remove and replace the plugs with the extenders fitted to the plug.

Hi Mark,
Many thanks for the advice and info.
We had not come across this before and it took time to figure out, removed one with some difficulty as we did not have the correct socket wrench - left the others in place and will check size before buying.
Do you know if replacement extenders are available ?
Alan

Keep an eye on eBay France, they come on there from time to time or hopefully some one may have one here. Was one damaged? No need to replace otherwise. If so you could try the ht lead direct, just buy a single long one, I assume you have this type fitted now?

I have never tried these, but worth considering

For the plugs just buy a rubber lined socket that grips the plug. I use the same for the 21 as they're very deep set. It also picks the plug up out of the hole too.

Got the extenders out without too much difficulty and 3 of the spark plugs, the 4th would not move despite all best efforts.
Drained sump, them tried to remove it to find 2 of the 16 bolts seemingly inaccessible.
Neither of the two exhaust parts purchased are correct - they will be sent back - almost certainly have to go custom.
Wheel security locking nut missing so cannot take wheels off.
What a day of frustration !!

4TH SPARK PLUG REMOVED - Happy Days ! Plenty of WD40, a great deal of patience, it took 3 days, a good wrench as opposed to a cheap one and plenty of wrist action.

SUMP - How to get to last 2 bolts ?

EXHAUST - Going for custom - quoted approx £350 from company 2 miles away, great price but probably more when he sees the 4 piece complicated schematic !

LOCKING NUT MISSING - Any suggestions welcome.

OIL FILTER REMOVAL - Seriously stuck since 97 - chain or loop ?

LOCKING NUT MISSING - Any suggestions welcome. Get an impact socket and hammer it over the top

OIL FILTER REMOVAL - Seriously stuck since 97 - chain or loop ? Stick a big flat blade through it

How is access restricted? Pics?

On a 21 the subframe gets in the way of the phase 1 sump but if I undo the engine mounts from the subframe and lift the engine up off its mounts I can get to them.

PS now the plugs are out pour some oil down the bores, about an egg cup full. leave it for a bit until you're ready to crank it then spin the engine over with no spark plugs in to blow the oil out.

Hi Dave
Many thanks
The sump bolts are positioned around the edge with the last two visible and feelable bolts situated under a horizontal bar at 1 and 11 o'clock.

Looking in the Haynes manual there may well also be one at 12 o'clock. If that is the case, I see no alternative but to take bits off to access these last ones.
Is it necessary to remove the sump bowl having already drained it ?

I have had a quote for a custom exhaust at £350 with 304 stainless steel from -
www.r-j-performance.co.uk
I am based in Birmingham so they are local and have been prompt and helpful on the phone and email.
Any alternatives or suggestions welcome.
