19 Renault 19 heat exchanger removal

Does anyone have a guide for how to remove the heat exchanger? I’ve disconnected the hoses, removed centre console and loosened off the dash. I can’t work out how to remove the heat exchanger from its housing though.

You have to remove the whole heater box... if you've loosened off the dash you should be able to squeeze it out through the passenger footwell.

Be careful and support the dash as it will drop and possibly snap some plastic locators - notably the one you can see at the back of the head unit receptacle.

Thanks, are there any bolts or clips that need to be undone on the heater box before you can slide it out?

There are a couple of screws holding the dash to it under the heater control panel, which of course you'll also have to remove to disconnect the control cables.

Then there are 2 bolts in the scuttle that clamp the blower fan and heater box to the shell.

That's it I think.

I unbolted dash on my 16v and swung it over to drivers side enough to change matrix, tight but doable.

It's possible, but you have to release the heater box and pull it away from the bulkhead enough the free the matrix pipe stubs from the aperture anyway. Once you're at that point you might as well just take the heater box right out and swap the matrix on the bench.

While it's out, you can vacuum out all the leaves and dead insects and it's a good idea to try and free up the flaps by whatever means appropriate, this will help prevent the knobs from snapping off the control panel.

Bit of a thread hijack.

This happened on mine- the previous owner snapped the panel. I have a replacement panel but I am not sure how to free up the mechanism. What causes the mechanism to jam? Is there a way to free it up without removing it?

Thanks in advance
