Hi,
Need to take the head off the old 19 (1.4 E6J 1991) - 350k miles - its done fantastic on one head gasket but no 3 cylinder not firing at all and water in the rocker cover so its defo new gasket time, looks fairly straight forward but anything to look out for ?

Actually it does, Neal, as I can't get my calipers onto the cam lobe cos' the rocker is blocking it and I really don't want to take that off, I measured the old cam lobe and it was 32mm dead. I rotated the crank as fast as I could by hand and manged to 'pump' some fuel out of the pipe, I'm sure its working ok, I will do it properly via starter motor tomorrow (need my long-suffering assistant i.e. wife) and I'll bet fuel will pour out. I have replaced the top half of the carb with the original one from the car (swapped out about 10 years ago), its identical - just incase its blocked jets or something dumb that I can't see.
Stupid question time, what happens to all the fuel pump pressure when the float chambers are full? Does the pump just shut off or something?

Loads of fuel pumping out on starter motor, can't be that. The old carb swapout didn't work at all, fired up but really rough with smoke out the exhaust, put the current one back and its back to 'normal' i.e idles and revs fine when stationary. Used timing light to check ignition, spot on. All I can think of is blocked jets, so I'll take them out and clean them next, its possible I might not live long enough to get to the end of this...

yep, still cutting out after just few hundred meters. When it cuts out, I restart but have to blip the throttle to keep it running, but if I increase revs above 2000 it cuts out again, like the mixture is too weak, does that mean the 2nd jet isn't working or something? Any info on the Weber 32 TLDR carb..?

ok, update - I fitted a new inlet gasket, then cleaned up the carb surface where it screws down onto the inlet manifold - can't get new gaskets so used some liquid gasket, also swapped the two components pictured from my old carb (took off the car few years back), see picture - this was just random in case they made a difference as they were easy to swap. Does anyone know what they are and what they do..?? Anyway, it seems to be running ok.....hope I'm not tempting fate but tock it for spin up the local dual carriageway and it help up - no dramas, so it looks like it was a carb-related problem, of course now I don't know which change made the difference..so would be good to know what those damn things do..!

Car defo running reliably now TG, but intermittent wipe not working..! Also normal operation just parks up on the screen - doesn't return to rest position - assume its the windscreen wiper timer relay..? They seem very specific to the car - would Renault still sell these..?
