Renault 11 Turbo Phase 2 Restoration

I absolutely love restoration projects like this and wouldn't mind undertaking one. What concerns me is the availability of parts for older Renaults (in particular the 5 GT Turbo) I guess one can only hope within the network of friends and the Renault community there's enough available parts to finish the project. It looks like Steve has more then enough 😁

Depends massively on the car and on the resto ethos, if you're a stickler for OE genuine only you will struggle and end up bankrupt!

Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider, I have a project in mind and really need to see it in the flesh first to actually see what's missing. As long as the exterior is OE in look, the engine with box with hopeful associated ancillaries are there. Then if it really comes to it then parts like boost hoses can be say black silicone. It's the potential opportunity to get into a 5 again (a Raider at that) which has my attention. It can take a year to do that's fine, I just don't wanna get shafted on parts from the purists making a buck.

Get it done Ric, plenty of parts can be purchased 2nd hand, or replicas available in France (interiors, body kits, grills etc, can easily have a 5 looking standard, engine bay is another thing, but you can have a presentable and running 5 without the silly price tag...

That was my thinking, apparently most of it is there, rolling shell, bumpers, glass intact, front seats and dash in place, even rolling on the original wheels. It needs a complete respray but I can deal with that.

Scrap that, it's been sold. Initially I was told no pressure, then wasn't told there was interest from someone else and only found out it was sold when the advert was updated. Great communication!

I don't wanna clog this awesome resto thread anymore than I have done but was just an insight to thoughts on potentially undergoing a similar thing.

I had a look at the pics and by my reckoning up good paint and missing parts, welding etc would easily tally up to 5-8k on top of initial purchase. The parts are scarce now and expensive - decent useable examples are available for the money needed to restore one to a half decent standard. Gtt restore always screams money pit to me so might have dodged a bullet with that.

True in one way, i did have a friend who works for a high end restoration company. They would have done the paint for mates rates (that was my plan) it would have been done to a high quality but on their own free time. Not to worry I'll just enjoy the Clio, you never know what's round the corner. Like you say dodging a bullet and/or silver lining.

Not much exciting progress this weekend, pretty much all prep work for further work to come..

Should be a load more updates soon!

Engine dressing continued this weekend now my paint arrived. Wasn't happy with the finish of the Cylinder head so did some research and found that painting an Aluminium Cylinder head doesn't seem to effect it (Plenty of American's doing it on V8's) so I got hold of some special engine enamel etching primer and paint. Enjoy the animation: :bt:

I also started to have another look at my refurbished R19 Rear Axle and what was involved in pressing the rear bushes back in. I got hold of an official Renault R19 Manual, and that was really about as much use as toilet paper :bc: so I took it round to see my dad @Bloater and see what he recommended. It wasn't too long before the two of us came up with a way of measuring both sides to ensure the bushes were level:

We then tapped the bushes in a little bit to ensure they were properly engaged into the rear beam, then to get them fully home, we came up with a rather simple, but crude process...

It worked great!! Rear axle now fully re-assembled!!

Thanks for reading :grin.gif:

I fear my eyes from today can not ignore a refurb of the rear bean, subframe, wishbones......you get the idea

I remember many many years back messing about with taking one apart at Paul B workplace and the associated joys so may far that job out

I neeeeeed a shiney c1j like that in mine!!!!

Following my fitting of the arms into the Rear Axle last weekend, I couldn't help but notice, that there was some of that horribe brown crusty stuff breaking out in a few places in the refurbished rear beam:

So I gave it all a good going over with the rust killer:

and then repainted it again in black:

Whilst I was at it, I gave the rear beam hollow arms a good coating of the Dinitrol Cavity Wax I bought ages ago to hopefully stop the grot from rusting from the inside out.
The Dinitrol comes out looking like that brown paste stuff as you can see on the cardboard tray next to the can:

Next I started to complete the inlet manifold assembly:
