Renault 11 Turbo Phase 2 Restoration

It’s always the simple things that go to 💩

Been fighting the wiper blades over the last week. Ordered a full set of Bosch super duper jobbies as per the look-up tool online for my 11.

Wipers arrived, and they don’t fit… why? They’ve not got the strange shape I need to fit to the wiper arms as follows:
2911BD09-29CD-4D65-B7E7-E6CC154AB41D.jpeg
You see along the top beam of the wiper, they’re not symmetrical from left to right, the right hand side, allows the wiper holder to clear the blade.
  • Back to Euro Car Parts and get speaking to the helpful lady. Tried a few options and NONE of them fit.
  • Nipped down to GSF - same. They recommend I try Halfords.
  • Halfords - same, but they recommend I try Renault.
  • Renault - “ha ha ha, f**k off Steve!”
  • Local breakers yard - (Thinking by this time, my best bet would be to get some later wiper arms off something) - “Do you have any old Renaults in, like an 19 or Clio Mk1, so I can take the wiper arms? - ha ha ha, f**k off mate!”
So with that, I went to my last Hope, a little local motor factors who stock all sorts of sh1te and got talking to the lady there who couldn’t be more helpful. She was opening boxes left right and centre. Then BOOM!!! 💥

We realised that if we just took some of the fixing clips off, of a set of these new blade styles, we could make them fit!!

PANIC OVER!!

For my own reference, for the future, these were the wiper blades I bought:

Buoyed by that success, I’ve pulled out into the evening sunshine one of the backs from the rear seats:

And following a liberal application of this proper plastic paint stuff:

It’s looking a LOT better for itself:

Weekend off this weekend for my beautiful wife @Millie_Bee ‘s 40th Birthday, so all systems go again on Monday night to make the final push to get it ready for it’s MOT and subsequent Le French Fest show the following weekend…

Having a job which means I’ve started travelling a lot during the week now, means it’s going to be TIGHT like a 🐯!!!

Did my usual magnetic numberplate fixing trick with project Renault 11 Turbo this evening, allowing me to change from the official registration number, to my ‘show-plate’

In other news, I’ve also spent HOURS copying my updates and photos from this thread to a new dedicated Instagram account so people can have a quick & easy flick through the effort that’s gone into creating this car over the past 8 years, rather than reading through all 73 pages of this thread.

Interestingly, there’s still 101 posts on Instagram covering everything that’s been done over the years!! 😲

Have been away in Memmingen for a couple of days this week with work, so arriving back home this afternoon, I dashed straight into the garage to get a few more jobs ticked off the list ready for my BIG Weekend!!

Ordered a custom-made bonnet stand to prop the bonnet up whilst at the show this weekend, and thankfully it arrived today. Chuffed how it fits and performs:

It’s basically a big bit of threaded bar, with 2 clever latches on the ends.

I then fitted the only front drivers seat I have, followed by the newly re-trimmed steering wheel!! 🙄 The housing behind it needed a lot of finagling to allow the steering wheel to turn, without rubbing.

I then torqued up all the front offside suspension /steering parts to spec before fitting the rear numberplate:

I basically now believe the car is ready for a shot at the MOT on Saturday… 🤞

*Ahem* YOUR magnetic number plate trick?? 🤔

D-DAY!!!

So up with the lark, and round to collect @jas_racing then over to Cambridge to collect the Car Transporter I’d arranged to rent for the weekend:

Then back home, and car safely loaded up:

Wanted to nip round my parents, to just let them have a look at the finished article:

Then it was down to the MOT Station. Little bit of confusion when arrived as they didn’t have a booking, but then they checked my name, and not Jez’s, and there it was!!

Left car with them and Jez and I had a walk into the town, and grabbed a Weatherspoons Muffin breakfast whilst sitting out in the beautiful sunshine:

Took a walk back to the MOT Station, to find out the car had FAILED 😞 😫🤬😭

The tester told us that it failed on:
  1. 1 x Rear Foglight un-lit when switch activated.
  2. Foglight warning logo on dashboard didn’t light up when switch activated
  3. Nearside steering track rod end locking bolt loose
  4. Offside steering track rod end locking bolt loose.
BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS!!!

Can understand the Foglight thing, but I’d arranged to take the car to another garage following the MOT to get the tracking done… so felt throughly p1ssed off it failed… Oh well, worse things happen at sea. Let’s move on.

So we then drove over to the garage for the tracking, and left it with them for an hour:

Whilst we nipped into a local garden centre, and had a quick 12 holes of Crazy Golf ⛳😆

Following the car being finished, we brought it back home, and hurriedly finished off a few outstanding things. Like the rear boot carpet:

And of course, fitting the new TurboRenault stickers!!

So that’s the car all locked and loaded for Le French Fest tomorrow, and it’s first time outside under the stars tonight for MANY YEARS!! ⭐

Hope to see as many of you at Le French Fest tomorrow as possible!!

Brings a tear to my eye, my 11T was four years old when I got it, first decent car I bought £3295 minus £295 trade in on my Fuego.
I was nineteen years old, and thought I'd proper made it, no loans, no rich Daddy, straight off the hip in cash.
Mate bought a red 5 GT at same time and that was another grand , such was the price difference then, two young streaks of piss razzing round when all our mates were on the bus, he's fat, miserable and bald now, I'm just grumpy and receding.
So 11T's are better.

16: 30 now and back home following a long day at a typical Baltic 🥶 Santa Pod for Le French Fest…

Was instructed to be there at 08:00 to get the car in-position for the Show & Shine area, and did that, but it was cold, foggy and Damp 😩 Every car in the section was just covered in dew, so everyone was just trying to dry everything out!!

After a couple of hours, the fog started to lift, but it didn’t warm up all day, and there wasn’t many people there at all in the end. Good mix of cars in the Show & Shine area, and I got a few pictures of John Wade’s beautiful Gordini Turbo that was also there:

The drag action was a bit light, as Santa Pod’s tractor broke down on the strip, and they had to struggle to get it off!!

Was told that the announcement for the prizes was going to be done at 15:00, so returned to the area then, only to be told that the prizes had been given out!!
