Rear suspension knocking noises

I have had a knock on the drivers side rear suspension for a while now and it was getting worse! Originally i assumed it was normal after speaking to some owners. Well demon tweeks said it was not normal but could not locate the source :( well i found it tonight with the help of my rubber mallet ! The rear subframe was loose due to the front bolt not being tight ! I did it up and the noise is gone :) i recommend people check this he they have knocking noises from the rear suspension. I will post pictures later. Martin

Interesting??

I've got the same and cannot find where its coming from so will have a look ASAP.

Even though i had the tracking done last week which improved things a lot the car still had a twitch coming out of corners as if it was steering ! I put this down to toe settings originally. I first thought the knock was a shock absorber and then suspected the bump stop cone, which is metal. The rubber mallet did the trick as i tapped the trailing arm and could see the subframe mounting moving - bingo ! The car feels ace now round roundabouts and accelerating out of corners - the onion is back lol martin

Nice one Martin, thats certainly worth knowing [smilie=cool.gif]

Here are the pics ;-)

I think there are basically only 4 bolts holding the subframe onto the body shell so, bearing in mind the engine, gerabox and suspension hangs off the subframe, a loose bolts is not good for saftey or handling !

This is the bolt which was loose, you can just make out a gap between the body and the subframe ...

And this is how to tighten it, i just undid a couple of the engine cover bolts allowing me to gain access ...

Oh yes ! Just drove across the a640 to huddersfield from milnrow and the vees handling is now how i always expected it to be, i am happy :)

Very useful this Martin as recently i've experienced a similar knocking noise - currently having my fluid leak sorted so whilst its up on the raised ramps will get them to check mine & tighten if required - cheeRS for this info bud :D

this may be the problem i have, when i reverse and put the brakes on slighty i get a loud knock,,,,, al be checking this asap!!!

Lots of people with knocks saying they're going to check the subframe bolts, but no ones come back to say how they got on, just interested to know how many, if any, had success?

Well if your car makes a knocking noise and feels like a death trap then I am sure it will be that ... Mine really started to handle badly especially coming out of corners ...

Even Demon Tweeks couldn't find the knock as they were checking suspension joints, shockers, bearings and linkages etc. As all these things bolt to the subframe relative to each other they were all fine.

It was only when I jacked the car up and gave each part of the underside a good tap with the rubber mallet that I heard the noise and traced it to the subframe mounting point.

I would also be interested to know if anyone else has had to tighten the bolts - apart from Mike who has already answered.

I didn't have any noise but did find one of mine was loose too when checking about underneath a while ago...........seems it's not uncommon and worth everyone getting theres' checked for peace of mind.

I would add that both mine and Mike's engines had been in and out a few times so it's possible they had not been torqued correctly or needed some sort of threadlock to secure it.
