5 GT Turbo R5 T1

Hi all, my first post here so please be gentle ! Here's my project, a genuine 1981 Turbo 1 with loads of competition history and currently in bare shell mode being prepared to 1981 period Cvennes Grp 4 rally spec, and yes, it will be rallied ! I'm doing as much work myself so progress won't be very fast as you can imagine , but my goal is to have the shell restored, strengthened and painted in the next few months then mechanicals early 2015. And yes, the pink is very Parisienne :-) Cheers, Myd

Its history was a racecar doing the circuits of Europe to good success, it was even shipped to Daytona in the USA to campaign a race against bigger American muscle, the 1st pic above is it actually leaving the garage at Daytona, I have small vid somewhere. It was running mainly standard spec for eligibility with some trick mods. Not sure of if it's had any famous drivers but it was a very recognisable little car.

Took me a long time to find one, a few T2s about but a T1 is what I needed to meet the Cat C (up to Dec 1981 age) rally category. The alloy roof skin, door skins and tailgate are all very precious !

Managed to squeeze a few hours out last weekend stripping the underseal coating from the floor section, progress was going well until the 4" grinder went up in smoke :stop.gif:

So with heavy rain forecast for the weekend I will turn my attention to the rear engine bay but with my new grinder :-)

Well there's not much to see as they are identical to their steel counterparts, the only difference is if you hold a magnet to the roof skin, door skins and boot skin, it just doesn't stick :grin.gif:

Anyway, a little update, shell is back from being shot blasted and is now back on my rotisserie getting prepped for cutting and welding :i-m_so_happy.gif:

Interestingly, myself and one other can carry this bare shell very easily so I'm curious as to what it weighs in this bare state.....bring on the weighing scales..! Here's the latest pics.

:) I'm sure the alloy bits look similar, but it would be interesting to see how the skins meet the rest of the panel - bare steel and aluminium obviously don't sit well together for long periods of time.... is it simply bonded? Is the tailgate fully aluminium etc?
looks like they did a good job with the blasting.

Ah right, yes roof is bonded and riveted to the steel roof guttering and door outer skins and tailgate outer skin is the same but to a steel door inner and GRP tailgate inner.
