Megane R26 bits and bobs! Hub bearings, window regulator, braided lines, brake squeel!

Hey everyone,

My first post! :drinks.gif:

I've come to the forum in the hope to get some advice / help / possible work on the following issues on my R26:
- Hub bearings
- window regulator
- steel braided HEL lines
- brake squeel!
- general health check

I've had my car in to a few mechanics locally to look at these things (apart from the HEL brake lines, that's an upgrade), but they are not megane R26 specialists and my attempts to get things fixed have been a bit useless.

I saw the R26 hub bearing guide here, so I'm hopeful that someone on the forum knows what they are doing with the Megane. I was wondering if someone could take a look at the car for me (I'd obviously pay for the work!). I can feel myself coming to the end of my patience with the car as I've had all these niggly things going on for years, and I just want it sorting :help.gif:

I had the hub bearings done at Aarons Autos in Derby, but the car didn't feel any different afterwards. So maybe they didn't need doing? I'm not sure! I have recently heard a rattle / rumbling sound at low speeds when going over bumpy ground, and the steering does seem slightly tighter than usual when going round roundabouts. It would be grand to get someone to do the check on the hub bearings just to see if they are seized or not. If one person can fix all the above things for me that would absolutely amazing, as I know us Renault petrolheads seem to be spread across the UK!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Jonathan

I dare say the hub bearings should still be fine if only done recently as they take years to seize up. The knocking will probably be balljoint/track rod end/droplink or hub stabiliser. They are all relatively cheap to replace.

Have you checked the tyre pressures recently? Makes a canny difference to steering weight/feel

Yeah my gut instinct tells me its something to do with the suspension / steering components. A local mechanic looked and said he couldn't see anything though. This is why I want someone who knows the car well to have a look.

I've read that there is a lower washer behind the brake disc that can work its way loose if the hub bearing has gone. I'm going to take a look this weekend at that.

Yeah I check the tyre pressures regularly :D

You can tell if the hub bearings are on their way out quite easily. Turn the wheel to one side ( whilst moving )
Does it self center ? Or at least have a go at centering ?

If it does , its unlikely to be the bearings.

The rack has a bush. I had mine changed. It feels bloody awful now as its highlighted my need for inner and outer tie rods.

There is also often a bit of play in the steering rack.

Yeah it has a go at self centering. It just feels heavy when cornering, most noticeable on roundabouts.

I had my full rack and inner and outer rod ends changed about 18 months ago. I used a refurbished one, so not sure if it's anything to do with that.

I need to check the gators because I'm sure I saw some grease splattered on my wheels, they tend to go quite often but do they have a big effect on steering and can they rattle if they've bust?

You can tell the tre quite easily. Just jack on the side of the car put your hands on 3 o'clock and a 9 o'clock position See if you can feel any play if you can it's the track rod ends

If you have play at 3 and 9, check 12 and 6.
Play @ both or 12 & 6 = usually wheel bearing
Play @ 3 & 9 = usually TRE outer or inner
