21 Turbo R21T Quadra (photo heavy)

Well its updating time..

I was having to take out the battery last weekend because frankly the rusty battery tray was really getting under my skin. A snapped bolt later and about 2 hours of grinding and putting epoxy primer on it I'm happy to report my battery tray is rust-free. (no pictures). Needs a silver coating and it can go back in. (after FCS and Duxford Flying legends airshow :D )

But,... being the little go-getter that I am :lazy2.gif::lazy2.gif: I though it'd be a great idea to take the airbox out, give it a clean, inspect the filter and if needed replace the airfilter... basic maintenance really.
When I came upon this sight:

the rust on the right doesn't bother me too much as I can easely sort that out (been sorted on the other side already) but that Sidemount IC is gone. It probably still holds boost (although that would explain why I feel stock 21Turbo's are highly overrated as the supposed crotch rockets they ought to be)

So,... New plan !
I need a Radiator core roughly 200mmx900mm with a thickness of 20-25mm so I can get this one of these operational:

Not my actual picture, cant find mine on foto so ... meh. Needless to say mine is a 'bit' bigger then the one in the picture.

I was hoping to put the chargecooler in when the new engine came in because I want almost all the chargecooler piping to be welded alu pipe,... but that'll have to get fasttracked now because although the SMIC probably still holds boost, now that I know it looks like that I dont want to drive it like that (yhea my mind is a weird place..)

Had to replace this on a Renault Master last year & thought its size would be useful for something so took some pictures for future reference.

What does that do, on the master? Not big enough for a normal water rad, doesnt look like a heater matrix...

It's an additional cooling rad to supplement the main unit on certain engine specs when things get to hot.

Damn. I was hoping to be the first Quadra to run a charge-air-cooler:eek::eek:
Oh well - be interesting to compare how the systems compare as mine is a different set-up to that. Where are you thinking of mounting that one?

Let me know what you use for a radiator. My plan is to use a normal (albeit smaller) rad in front of the main radiator and slim-line fans.
Initial plan was to use an A/C condenser rad (as some 21Ts came with A/C so the space is there) but these are far too restrictive for the little 12V pumps that I have so got to find a slim radiator to go in front of the main radiator.

Small update,

I've ordered a custom core (Finally have it in) for a custom ALU rad for the chargecooler. It'll be getting welded sometime this year. The unit is 200x1000x30 millimeters and ought to cool sufficiently strong... I'm not sure if I'll run fans on it, I think i'll run it without the fans at first, measure the system before the rad en after aswell as before the chargecooler and after and then go from there.

Put a chargecooler in my GTA when I first got it in 1990 :). Was not really anything off the shelf back then so we built our own. Uses an electric water pump from a Mercedes sprinter, a Fiesta header tank and a motorcycle rad behind the front spoiler with a custom vent to cool it. Friend of mine welded a water jacket around the standard intercooler and the coolant ran up and down the car in the copper air-con pipes that are fitted to all the cars whether they have aircon or not (mine didn't). Has always worked a treat but just had to have the rad recored but it was secondhand in 1990 so it hasn't done bad :)
