19 R19 16V Turbo

Member
Evening Gents,

though it be best to open up a small topic on one of my project cars, the R19 16V Phase 2 Turbo.

Intro:

I bought the R19 after I crashed my Clio (1) on the nurburgring. Bought it for 300 euros from some guy in the netherlands with a dead battery and 4 flat tires, winched it up on the trailer and back to belgium we went.

Before long it was at Jo's place of worship ready to recieve the needed sweet-sweet lov'n...

Start off fitting the 2liter instead of the F7P

Along with fitting Powerflex Black through the entire subframe.

Upgraded the suspension not long after with a set of GAZ Gold's and made some bespoke topmounts:

2013 track season ended on a high note:

scontent_b_lhr.xx.fbcdn.net_hphotos_xpa1_v_t1.0_9_935166_10152d0bc7c482cb882a8c4519dc7456c72b1.webp

the R19 was performing pretty good, the alignment was spot on back then and I was overall pretty content with the car with the exception of the tires (I do not like R1R's...)

At this point the speclist stood at:
- F7R from a Sport Spider bottomend with a F7P from a Clio head
- Gaz Gold coilover set
- Bespoke Uniball topmounts
- Powerflex Black bushing through the entire subframe
- Clio 2 RS 172 Brakes
- Laguna 1 Master brake cilinder
- Devil Exhaust system
- Oilcooler Mocal 13 Row

The decision was made a while before this point to build a turbo engine based on a F7P, Low boost it and just "see how it goes".

The "lets see how it goes" soon went out the window and we went to work doing it proper, doing it once and not cutting corners albeit sticking to the principle on which I started the build. cost/benefit ratio had to be sound, retard-proof, built to last

Too much to type now so I'll just spam you all with pictures:

This last weekend(s) the final work was done in the form of:

- Speedline SL 1213 (Megane CUP) rims 16" 8J
- AP Racing 4 Pots brakes
- Clio 2 CUP Driveshafts
- Pagid Yellow brakepads
- Yokohama AD08 R tires

I think I'm DONE for the minute with investing in the car :) right now it'll be DRIVE, DRIVE, DRIVE, DRIVE :)

instead of build build build like the past few weeks / Months.

Regards !

Nice work,Turbo will add the kick the standard model lacked.I had one in the same colour, liked the car but was a bit disappointed with overall performance, compared to other French hot hatches I owned.Welcome to the forum :drinks.gif:

Low boost turbo on a F7P is how they should've come from the factory...

Specially with my current set up, boost only comes in at 4000 RPM. So you can still drive "normally" just fine and when you need to go you have the "old school" lag till you get up to 4000 RPM and the kick comes.
It's not running a stupid amount of boost (500 mBar sustained, spikes to 600 mBar) but it's a nice and good amount of boost which gives it, as you said, that oomph it needs to come alive.

I agree with you, running at a sensible boost,i prefer the old skool type of Turbo lag, same with 2 stroke motorbikes all or nothing power:i-m_so_happy.gif:, mine used to run hot in traffic pretty quickly, but I liked the look of the R19,Had Momo Arrows alloys on,swapped a 205 GTI for the 19,i always wanted a Chamade!!!,they are almost extinct in the UK now.Should think there is less than 10 left on the road.Great car you have made ENJOY:grin.gif:

WOW @Entity, what a great project!!!

I love what you've done with the "HUB modification to uniballs & extender pins to correct rollcenter & aid with bumpsteer" How did you work out what information you needed?? Looks like it will hold it's geometry a lot better now? Have you driven the car in anger yet? Do you have any video's on YouTube? :)

Not driving it in anger yet @Big Steve - Raider
It's booked to get it's tracking done this saterday seeing as everything is either new or re-fitted to the car so the tracking (toe mostly) is all over the place.

I'd rather not push it unless I know the Toe, camber and all that is bang on.

For the Rollcenter kit, it was a group-buy on ClioSport by one of their members (NorthLoopCup) who engineered these and produces them in very small batches and only with pre-order.

I personally don't have the time, patience or engineering background to work out something like the hubs on my own.

It should hold geometry a lot better yhea, although I do only have about 3CM worth of thread left on the coilover's so it's well beyond the 3-4CM of drop that the hubs are designed to compensate. That being said, the wishbones ARE still pointing down so in any case geometry wise it'll be load better.

First outing on track is schedules for October 21st at "Vroemdag" which is a event hosted on Circuit Zolder where car clubs are invited to come for the day and drive mentally or physically handicapped children about the track.

That'll be the first outing (at lower speeds then normal off course considering we're driving about with kids) and afterwards I've got a trackday booked in for November 2nd depending on weather.

No vids of it being driven in anger yet but ... they are comming ;)
I'll post some up as soon as I get them !

Cheers & thanks for the good feedback chaps !

Well I've tracked the car twice now,
all I can say is it runs SPOT ON !

It's very sharp and precise and I can "place" it on the track where I want. It's very neutral in handling, could be a bit more eager on turn-in but thats got to do with how I choose to set my tracking, nothing to do with the car or the technique behind it itsself.

It feel very composed, even at high speed corners and is pretty hard to unsettle. Playing with the throttle mid-corner makes the nose tuck-in just that little bit more by transferring the weight to the front wheels when letting go of the throttle.

Again, very composed, I can "place" it where I want on track with confidence and I'm not missing anything in terms of performance.

- Brakes are rock-solid and stop like a mofo !
- engine is spot on, Low-boost as it may be, I don't miss / needed any more BHP when running at circuit zolder. I don't buy in to the "more is better" paradigm that seems to reign currently, it's good as it is. There is off course always some places where you think 'if only I had some more torque here so ...' and 'if only I had ...' but thats pretty basic & standard to think that.
- Suspension is bang on, very neutral and eager

++ Will track this thing again, and again, and again, and again
