R19 16V ph2 alternator removal

Hi,

on saturday while my brother and I were on our way to our dads birthday, the charge indicator lights up  We turned off all unnecessary stuff and made it back before the battery ran dead.. Tested with a multimeter and it's definitely not charging..

I'm trying to remove the alt, but the bolt holding the alt front bracket to the PAS pump is impossible to get to - do I need a "swan neck" spanner for that one or is it possible to get the alt out in a different way than described by Haynes? It doesn't look like there will be room between the slam panel and the manifold if I take the route of removing the alt rear bracket..

cheers..

Right, that bolts a pain... here's a technique I've used a couple of times.

One of the holes in that bracket at the bottom is actually a slot. The one nearest the front of the car iirc. Anyway, you have one bolt and one nut on that bracket. The nut is threaded onto a long bolt that goes all the way through the mounting assembly. You can get a 16mm spanner on the head of the bolt, under the inlet manifold and a ring spanner on the nut, easily. So you can remove that bolt altogether.

Then for the troublesome bolt into the PAS pump, you can wiggle the bracket back and forth a few degrees, the bolt will probably rotate with the bracket so push the bracket back then hold the bolt still with an open ended spanner while you pull the bracket back towards you. Repeat a couple of times using the spanner to make sure it turns when youre pushing, and stays still when youre pulling and it should go loose enough for you to undo it enough to lift the bracket off (it's slotted remember)

cheers, Neal.. the long bolt/nut is out already, I just need to remove the bolt that goes into the PAS pump.. I can't seem to shift the bracket back and forth at all with the bolt still tightened up..

Whoever designed this ancillary bracketry setup is a tool!

;)

and just for info - I got it out without removing the headlight.. removed the alloy "cradle" from the alt in-place and I could just pass it by the manifold and washer bottle..

Yeah this job is a nuisance and ultimately it comes down to blood, sweat and tears to get it out and in again.

I'd love to meet the person who designed that PAS pulley / bolts combo
