Quicksilver exhaust for mk 1

Hi guys

I know that this has most likely been discussed to death previously. But I hope that you will bear with me.
I am looking for a new exhaust for my mk1 vee, for next season. I really like the look of the QuickSilver. As it is fully polished, I think it will look great through the rear bumper. However I am not yet fully convinced which exhaust to choose.
I have heard that some people think that the quicksilver is too loud? I was leaning towards the super sorts variant (95 db), as the car is purely for fun, and I would like a lot more sound in it. However I can see that the sports variant is rated at 93 db, so it doesn't seem to be a great difference?
Would love to hear your thoughts and also experiences on this? How is the quality of the quicksilver system? Any pictures of it fitted and so on?
Hope you can help.
Kind regards
Dennis

Dennis,

I too was drawn to the looks and perceived quality. However, having seen images of the internal architecture - the design is not congruous for good gaseous flow. As a result, there is resonance boom within the cabin.

The positives when I had one fitted was: weight saving, looks and reduced mileage! Some folk find the cabin boom less bothersome than others...

Hope that helps a little.

Regards
Kett

The Quicksilver OMG must be possibly the worst exhaust ever made! The noise is appalling and the drone even beats ear plugs, you need to carry a large supply of paracetamol! my car came with one fitted and after 10 miles I had to pull into a garage and stuffed half a toilet roll into each ear before I could get the car home! Your neighbours wont be talking to you at the end of the week [smilie=icon_eek.gif] Spike Janspeed is also polished stainless and sounds much better both inside and out as it does away with the cross pipe and final cat :approve: :approve: vey good exhaust note and plenty of burbles and rumble on the over run [cmilie=iconcheers.gif]

I don't think the Spike fits on Ph1 though. There were Janspeed versions available at one point...

In my opinion, nothing really looks as good or as well finished as the QS. A few of us have even removed the centre bar of the rear bumper (trophy style) which combined with the QS silencer looks very neat and tidy. However, like Kett, I too have seen pictures of their inards and they aren't pretty or at all developed. Basically they only consist of two perforated tubes mitred at a 90 bend to exit the box. Sports and SupeSports is just less and more wadding. The saying goes "all that glistens isn't always gold" and it's never been more true.
By all accounts, for an OEM quality exhaust, Spikes Janspeed is probably the best out there by a long shot. Its not much to look at which is slightly important on a ph1 as the silencer is very much on show (it's subjective and only my opinion) but it's fantastic at everything it does.
You always have the Orbisoud exhaust to consider but to be honest, and no offence to anybody who has bought one, you'd need your head testing for spending that much money on a silencer and a few V-band clamps. A close friend of mine who builds race cars looked at one and told me he can't see how it's justified in the slightest.
Considering all and baring in mind you've partially de-cated the car, maybe taking the car to a bespoke fitter for a custom rear silencer/s that meets your needs is a good shout.

As a side note, if you want it to sound gruff, get rid of the super restrictive cats off the manifolds! Mine ended up with a gutted QS OMG and fully decated and sounded very lairy. So lairy and loud infact it made me very ill on one journey. I only drove it a few times like it but my bets are that with a modified polished OEM silencer it would have been lovely.

Thanks a lot so far guys. What is involved in removal of the final cat? Does the car need ECU remapping then?

The 'final cat' is in the OEM back box.
Removal of this does not trigger the lambda sensor.

ECU remap question: no not needed, but possibly needed with complete straight-through exhaust project.

I'll second this, have one myself and i absolutely love it.

Love the early ktec phase1 i just had fitted ,lovely on start up and off throttle, zero drone inside .Might get prospeed in Cardiff to bypass the cats for extra oomph

I personally loved the sound and looks of my quicksilver omg but i couldn't deal with the drone inside the cabin as at times it was unbearable,I now have a janspeed on and couldn't be happier :race:

I drive a Quicksilver Supersport (OMG) for a year now. I love the sound (but never enough pops, bangs, crackles, that is a pity), it is not too loud but the drone is indeed really annoying.
