PSA: grinding / cut off discs

Now I’ll start this by saying you’re all grown adults here and know how to do a risk assessment.

Recently I had been reading a build thread where a discussion started about grinding / cut off discs, in particular the fact they have a use by date which many were unaware of.
I am aware of this as one of my first jobs involved smashing cutting blades into a moving stone wheel to sharpen them, this is one of the most dangerous ways to use an abrasive stone. The training course obviously covered the health and safety side of it, showing what to check for etc. I’m sure if you Google it there are plenty of videos showing discs etc exploding.

The reason I bring this up now, which you may have already guessed, is I have a stack of old discs of various function, the thread should have been a red flag but being me I took the attitude of, what’s the worst that can happen!

I already know this because I’ve seen the videos and always picture a member off here, standing inside a gtturbo engine bay, white as a sheet, with half a cut off disc stuck in the groin area of his jeans, whenever I use the angle grinder.

I put a new old cut off disc in the angle grinder to cut a 10mm rod down by the same amount, obviously I was dress in the appropriate ppe of joggers and tee shirt with my safety squints on. I got half way through and felt an almight blow to my stomach which stopped me dead. The disc had disintegrated and sent parts flying into me, luckily they weren’t massive and did no real damage.

Check your discs and don’t become complacent people

Always gives me the fear when people (usually panelbeaters) remove the wheel guard completely. Amusingly it is one of my least favourite tools as I am left handed, this makes it a very awkward tool as I always hold it the wrong way round. I did wonder why they never made a left hand grinder, but on reflection it would require everything to be reversed , meaning the like of flapdiscs would be made the opposite way round. could you imagine the damage if you loaded the wrong direction wheel .
@Norwich Nick , what is the reason for the date, is it due to the bonding agent in the disc?????
Every day is a day at School...........

You see it all the time, guards in the way so they get removed. I’ve seen a lot of people on tv shows with guards off and I always wonder how they get around the health and safety aspect.

Never considered an angle grinder to be handed, now I thought about it I can understand your dislike for them.

Pretty much exactly that, the bonding agents breaks down.
You also run the risk of overheating discs if used on the wrong materials which also causes them to explode.

I’ll see if I can find the info to post up 👍

Ha! I never really ever thought about it until you mentioned it @Steve Swan but also left handed (all the most intelligent people are 😆) lol

While have considered removing the guard In the past for access, self preservation and common sense prevailed and avoided.

Interesting. I get a supply of cutting discs from my mate that runs a stainless steel and glass fabrication company, he uses discs maybe 30% then theyre not deep enough to go through handrail tube and he bins them. When I saw that I asked him to save me the wasted discs so I have a huge stack of them in the drawer - some of them will be a few years old now!

Nice pic btw, did you put your special boxers on for that? :D

Makes sense, just use the oldest first 🤣

You’re lucky I was wearing any! I wasn’t planning on doing anything but got distracted and started tinkering, at least I put work gear on, I normally forget and wonder why I have no nice clothes 🤪

Had a very early experience of disc failure, age 8-9 . Dad cutting the top out of a bulk diesel tank to make into a scrap bin with a 9 inch grinder, Jammed ,broke up straight into his cheek , as you could imagine not pretty ,
We use grinders/ cutters from 3inch upto 14inch engine driven . Get through 100s of discs it pays to buy quality ,
Stay save boys , quality gear there too , you only get one set of every thing .
One more thing the wire wheels are even worse. Leather apron is the answer
