PH3 Black 21T

Hadn't driven the 21 since picking her up on Saturday in Glasgow so thought I'd take her out this evening....great drive, still nice & tight....was good to get her on some B roads after 350 motorway miles...anyway she didn't feel that quick....no wonder it's only boosting @ 12psi or so flat-out in 3rd & 4th....& we all know that's not enough...so that needs adjusting to a more respectable level...

Also, the headlights are shocking....even full beam is like dipped in my BMW...+ the battery light flickers when you brake & have full beam on.....so that needs investigating....:-( other than that she's mint & handles sweet as a nut..just got to turn the boost up & sort the lights & I'm laughing...:-)

After my previous night vision (or lack off) drive i had a look at the battery connections & let's just say that i'm amazed i got home.....they were well loose... All tightened up now & i'm out tonight for a night drive & boost adjust - I did whip the heat shield off to look at the down pipe......the turbo isn't a 21 one, the housing looks bigger & the elbow/down-pipe is held on with an exhaust clamp...NO nuts or bolts....just a big pipe clamped on the back of the blower....not something i've seen before.......i think she's gonna fly with a boost tweak....

Also bought a K&N cossie group A filter & silicone hose for a bargin price.....not as cheap as the black pearls but still well under half the price of a new one..... so i'm heading over to Ollies on Thursday after work to do some light "tuning" .....

Next job is a front mount but i want to measure the available space before buying one that isn't suitable......

Thought this one would fit low down at the bottom of the radiator but above the splitter:

Or one of these, but not sure if they'll fit between the fog lamps.....like the UAD stylie:

I'll have a proper look on Thursday...

Oops my bad with the battery clamps, sorry mate!

Told ya the turbo isn't standard for the 21, the exhaust housing increase and big downpipe makes a great difference, just don't boost her too much and blow her to bits hehe!

To much boost....??? she's only running 12psi or so...unless the gauge is incorrect.....i'll give her a tweak & take her our for good run tonight.....don't worry about the battery terminals.....although they were shocking.....

That's strange that it's running 12psi mate, it was definitely running at 15psi when I picked you up at the airport, as I had some fun :) on the way in and it was sitting bang on the 15 mark.

Someone asked me where the car was the other day as they noticed it was missing from the drive, I was near teary eyed telling them it was gone hehe!

It's running 15psi in forth & fifth, but in 2nd & 3rd shes only pulling 12psi...she does pull well in 4th & 5th but is a tad flat in 2nd & 3rd......hence i'm gonna up the boost a tad....carefully of course.....:-)

would be worth doing a boost leak test and checking the actuator before just upping the boost an masking the problem ;)

Good thinking.....I'll have a quick check before taking her out after dark to check the lights....:-)

Just been out for a quick spin around the lanes & the headlights are better, not 100% but better + the battery light still flickers when full beam & heaters are on so that needs more checking...:-(
As for the boost issue, she won't go above 12psi, I wound the bleed valve out & it made no difference....couldn't see any obvious leaks but did notice that the actuator rod has a slight bend...so I wound the bleed valve back in & will have a proper check over at ollie's on Thursday evening....better to be safe than sorry...!!
She does go well but not well enough..:-(

do you know how to boost test? actuator rod could be bent but if its not adjusting with a valve is prob not the problem, but actuator could be faulty, same issue as tony's red one. battery light could be poor engine to body earths or just be the alt dropping below voltage, check battery with a multimeter with the car running and all the electrics on and see if its still above 12 volts, if not could be faulty too.

common problem on the 21 alternator is the 2 pin block connector, when you unplug it if it has not already been done and you will find corrosion in there. Clean up the connections on both the alternator and plug and you should find it much better, assuming the alternator is ok.

Thanks Craig.....even in France you can give good advise....shame it wasn't in French though....;-)

Me...?? know how to check the boost.....?? in a word......no... what i intended to do was remove the bleed valve & see what boost the actuator is set at, i'm also going to remove, check & refit all the boost hoses & intercoolers - the wing mount cooler looks fooked so i'm going to replace that with an alloy one i have in the garage.....other than that i'm unsure.....
She was boosting around the 15psi mark on the drive home from Glasgow but only in 5th......something's obviously not right...i just need to track it down...
By the way, would a boost leak in the system stop her boosting over 12 psi.....???

If you have a boost leak then the turbo should work harder to compensate, assuming the actuator us working fine which is where I think the problem is, unless it's a big leak. To boost test you'll need a compressor or a good foot pump. Do it before you start taking it all to bits. Remove the air filter and find something to bung up the hole, aerosol can, plastic bottle, anything that can be jubilee'd in place. Take of a vac pipe to the manifold, say the one to the over boost switch and connect to pump/compressor. Leave the engine off. Try to pressurise the system to 15psi for starters. The first leak you'll hear is the bleed valve so close that. If the system is fine then you should be able to pressurise the system to required boost level, and it shoul hold it fine for a min or so. This method can only be used on the inlet side, leaking exhaust manifold gasket would also reduce boost, which can be tested on a similar way by bunging the exhaust but tricky to pressurise up. It sounds complicated but once you've done it once it's a great way of testing

Just make sure you drop the pressure from the compressor, no more than 18psi as you may blow caps off the ic. Build up the pressure slow and keep an eye on your boost gauge. The bung for the air filter may pop out too so make sure your not above it or angled at the screen lol, it will make you jump!

Well the tuning begins.....the group A cossie filter arrived today.......they really are chuffing huge.......

This one came with the silicone hose, trumpet & clips.....not bad for ?45.00...

Good price. You fixed the boost problem then?

No, that's tonights mission.....gonna remove, check & refit all the boost hoses & check the intercoolers - hopefully i'll find something obviously loose....i know the wing mount cooler looks fooked so that's gonna be changed for a start & i'll check all the bunged holes & take-offs on the hoses etc.....

Report back later/tomorrow....

Well, I've removed all the boost pipes & intercoolers....found 2 leaks, one was the top mount to plenum flexible pipe - this was really fooked with loads of splits...and the other was a section of pipe that joined the intercooler take off from the turbo - this is something I've never seen before....it's a solid pipe that joins the small turbo outlet to the larger boost hose....(I'll post a picture up later)....anyway I also fitted the cossie filter & Ollie's sourcing me a replacement pipe for plenum so I should be up and running tomorrow night..:-)
