i need a gearbox for my ph1 19 16v , its only gunna be a trackday car used a few times a year , does any other gearbox fit the f7p? and whats the best to use for a track car? and strongest
i need to buy one in the next 2 wks ready for a trackday in april
cheers

not certain about this but the one out of the 1.8v will fit (laguna/r19 etc), some diesel ones will fit too, not sure about strength or ratios

plenty other boxes fit, as for strength your pretty limited, hard starts just pop the diff circlip.

but pretty much any jb1, 3 or JC5 will fit right on. Not all though but most

ive seen a jc5 for sale , is it out of the megane?
i know all about the circlips, my thirst car was a ph1 19 16v and i put 3 gearboxs in it because of my heavy right foot

jc5 is fitted to all sorts. Some are diesels, some are the 2l 16V's, some are the 2l 8v lagunas and so on.

Heavy right foot has nothing to do with it its driving like a dick that does the circlips in.

thats what im saying, how do you drive like a dick slowly? it was my thirst car and i mullered it , good times! i would do it again if i was 17!

craigcoleman

there was a 'race' jb3 box or something on ebay last month, portugal and it was £2,500. came with re-inforcing plates apparently.

cheers chris , didnt even no that existed.
My local scrappy has got a complete ph2 16v in there , i can have the box for £50 , if its good its worth spending £65 more for peace of mind.

Then on the other hand , im probably just gunna kill it on the track any way !

If any one in the norfolk area wants to do a charity track day at raf marham for 70quid!, in april , search the forum on PistonHeads.com :: Speed Matters . The first time we paid 70 for the car , then sold it after for banger racing !

I know my JC5 is out of a clio 197 apparently. Looking for a replacement though. Price checked the other day and it was £439.00 with the old one swapped in.

I'm assuming you have to drill the holes for this around the circlip? Is it actually worth it though?

How often does this go on? I'm moving there to work in June. Sounds like something I should look into ;)

the newer boxes, 172's, 82's etc etc all have a bolted on plate like this to prevent the circlip popping.

The boxes themselves can take power (look at gtt's) its just the diffs that can't.

Yes you need to drill and tap holes it will prevent failures, will it stop it totally thats another matter.

The main issue is when theres a high torque change the cog grips the washer and twists it popping the clip. If the washer was perhaps coated with something slippy (loads of things I can think of) then it may stop it popping, but just the plain steel and whatever oil happens to be there doesn't seem to be enough.

its on april and october each year, there taking details now on piston heads , normally me and a mate goes halves on the day and a car with no mot , and just muller it all day , but this year im spending some money on the 19 , because i think it will handle well , it would be nice to see a few more renaults there !
