5 GT Turbo Pete and Wills J Plate full RESTORATION

Thought it was time to say a quick hello and give you all an update on our Renault 5 GTT project. It’s one of the few remaining J plates with 51K on the clock; although I’m not convinced this is genuine as the clocks stopping are quite common as most of you probably know. Having said that the steering wheel, gear knob, seats and carpet don’t suggest a car with intergalactic miles!
I’m new to the Renault scene, but Will who owns the body shop where the resto is taking place knows them well.
Picked the car up in Leicester. Not ideal that someone else has already started stripping it as I like to photograph and label parts as I complete restorations, but I’m surprised at how simple the little Renault is to work on.

The car seems to be a really sound base, with minimal amounts of rot in the usual places. The windscreen is sound. The inner arches are good with signs of minimal rust. Jacking points all good and solid, was expecting these to be goosed. The outer sills are looking a bit tired and rusty and as this is going to be a full on resto we have ordered new sills.

Nice copy part nearside passenger wing rotting away! Genuine Renault one on order.

Repair panel also on order from GT Tuning for the driver’s inner wing

Not quite sure how it’s managed to rust here! Rear offside inner wheel arch will need a small repair.

I’ve read a few posts about the battery tray area suffering from the dreaded rot. Not surprising as the drain hole on this one is completely blocked. Thankfully underneath is all solid.

Brake Servo removed. This will benefit from a complete sanding back to bare metal and painting as it’s just surface rust and working fine. The brake master cylinder looks like the original and will be replaced along with all the brake lines.

The car is currently being stripped of every part, clip etc . so that any lurking rust can be dealt with. The sub frames will be removed so that the floors can be checked, rust treated and underseal re-applied.

Before all this begins I’ve had the fun job of removing all the brake lines. Lots of cursing a swearing. Surprisingly they are in really good condition. They will all be replaced along with new flexis which are on order.

The Sunroof was carefully removed, so that the surround can be sanded down and restored to the factory finish. This also means that the roof can be rust treated on the edges and painted fully before the surround is bonded back in place.

Next job was to remove the dash. Mountains of extra wires, with years of people messing about with speakers, subs, extra boost gauges and god knows what else.

The Engine is stripped at the moment but will benefit from new liners, pistons, shells etc.
