I think that chat/banter decline coincided with FB presence.

I initially thought that FB was a better platform but soon realised that the archives here need these discussions.

The real interesting threads are the projects - but so many died a death.

I had good intentions of 'properly using' my Ph1 as a grand tourer. The dream is still there - but time constraints make the project management difficult. Watch this space!

Projects won't be the same now as the vast majority would never consider tearing apart an appreciating £25k+ car that is seen as a future classic. Shame really but you can't really blame people when there are much cheaper ways to go faster.......not quite as cool though.

Totally agree with Williams and Colin that those early years on the forum from 2006 to 2009/10 were superb [cmilie=iconcheers.gif] and there were a fair few meets that were extremely well attended and the banter and friendship was brilliant [smilie=yay.gif].

Looking back maybe it was because our Vee's weren't that old back then and folk didn't mind travelling to enjoy a good day out with fellow enthusiasts. As the Vee has these last few years really started to appreciate in value then maybe folk are more reluctant to put too many miles on them now.

I don't use FB myself but think it should be kept just to point potential new members to what must be the essential place to be for future Vee owners that is this great forum [smilie=yay.gif] [smilie=yay.gif]

I run TurboRenault with four other chaps. We work hard to drive traffic toward the forums, and leverage social media to do so. You HAVE to engage there as its just so popular and commonly used. We have a strong forum thats grown hugely in the last 3 years since it founded. We also offer a place to live for all the legacy forums that were killed off by declining numbers and social media, so currently we are TurboRenault, plus the legacy 21 Turbo Owners Club, Retro Renault forums, Renault 5 Turbo and Gordini forums and a few other bits. These mergers boosted our user base, archived the content of the merged sites for future reference and put it on a modern XF platform thats pretty shit hot as far as forums go. On top of that we cater for all models, as we felt model specific will only ever be a shrinking scene

We also adopted the "Free forever" mantra, there are no subs or membership you just register (you can even log in with a Facebook account for super laziness) and post away, and we have zero adverts, because again, thats the only way to compete. I don't go on PistonHeads any more because the forum functionality sucks by comparison and the adverts piss me off - same for many sites now. We try and provide the ideal - Free to use, no adverts, no power crazy opinionated mods. No decisions are made without 3/5 team members agreeing. We do easily self-sustain though, none of us need to pay to keep the place running.

I say the above because as a paid, model variant specific club, this place is so limited on user base it puts itself at risk. You are lucky that the cars have developed a cult status which will likely see it survive for quite a while yet - unlike the 21 Turbo and I watched that club decline to a rarely-visited nothing. Its part of the reason we kicked off TR.

James if you ever need an "Out" we'd quite happily on board you guys and give the Vee its own subsection. I know you're going to tell me to get lost right now :) but just know the option is there.

Dave I was pleased to read your post and it's good to see your actions with archiving these forums. :approve:

The everything for free has me curious, we obviously have hosting costs, plus being an active club there is insurances to buy, merchandise, and car show costs to consider. Our small membership fee covers a percentage of everything. The rest magically appears. ;)

I do hope we won't need wellies this summer.

[post]220645[/post] The everything for free has me curious,
We get by with funds generated from the club shop (we sell mainly bits and bobs but occasional bespoke part runs really help out), a few donations on occasion, and something called skimlinks which is black magic by our forum dev and generates enough to run the whole place on its own. Merchandise we re-sell for cost + a few percent.

Our hosting costs are very low, as Andy has great contacts. I think the hosting and XenForo license costs us under £300 a year, but it might be even less than that, and its not like its a budget service....its lightening fast and we dont struggle for bandwidth. We'd be lost without him to be honest!

Can put you in touch for chat if you like.

Shame to close the FB feature. I don't use the forum much, but I use FB much more...

With only 24 members bothering to vote as now  then it's hardly a representative sample though .................

Surely keeping the FB page even if it's just to direct folk to the forum is the better option ?

I have never been a Facebook person myself. I tend to agree with keeping the Facebook presence for the club but the forum is where the conversation should live.

I haven't voted because neither of the options I agree with.

-Install chat on the forum >> No, old tech now. I'd launch a Facebook group chat or a Whatsapp group chat, as a preference to that, multi-device accessible current working tech that does pics and links and all the stuff you want. At TR we also have someone running an Instagram & twitter account for us (member, volunteer) with a mix of hashtags (but always including #turborenault) to pull attention from there too.

-Close FB Group >> No, as described in my earlier post. The FB group is a big fat advert getting attention from the most commonly used social media interface on the planet, with a built in algorithm to highlight [Groups] of interest to friends of current members.

I dont know if anyone else has noticed, but it feels like forum posts have ramped up since the facebook page was locked :approve:

As a newbie (don't let the Joined Forum date fool you) - is there a Facebook group?

Similar to this group it seems, I was part of the GP UK Owners Club, which had a thriving forum but unfortunately it was overseen by someone that sold their GP years ago and didn't give a damn about the forum. Certain members tried to take control of the forum but in the end he just shut the whole thing down and that was the end of it. They now actually have a real thriving group on Facebook. The real problem is when you tried to find information, help and advice which is crap when using Facebook. Car forums are great but unfortunately you'll always have lack of usage for such a unique model as the v6.

Voted,

Maybe being a bit of a Luddite here but personally I think that FB is a faster way of comms, getting answers to questions etc. On portable devices the FB page is easy to both find and use.

The forum also needs to stay as some of the info on here is irreplaceable.

As Honsta mentioned earlier, I was also on the GPUKOC and the amount of info on there was also irreplaceable.

FB doesn't cut it when it comes to that sort of thing but for anything I've wanted to know FB answers have been much quicker.
