Old school hammers

Damn you were lucky!
I think you were maybe going a little bit too fast into that corner.... :)

Extremely too fast... narrow road, left hander, greasy road, with a slight hump on it. All the ingredients for a disaster... young and stupid but it taught me a lesson

I need some speed.

Not 19 16V speed but something actually a bit nippy.

The thoughts lately have been along the lines of Volvo turbo power, 40 or maybe a 60. Then you have to mod it to make it fast and your still limited by the fact its a small engine putting out a lot of power with inherent turbo drawbacks.

So I have been looking at older mercs. BMW's just aren't quick enough, m5's maybe but too much money for what they are.

Older mercs however are cheaper and most are v8 powered. They also tend to drop the rear bumper to the deck and sometimes lift the front which is amusing at the lights.

So I'm currently looking at merc sec's which are getting cheap but getting ropey as well.

Ideas welcomed.

But basically it needs to be nippy 150 mph + and cheapish as I refuse to pay silly money (m3 or m5) but 540i's are on the radar

Speed isnt everything though chris, ive always been a fan of a e38 740 proper luxo barge with a widescreen sat nav and the freeview convertor box in the boot luvley jubley. my boss's dad has just aquired his 3rd Alpina B12 nice bit of kit.

If i had a ovlov id have a 850R

Rx8s has to be one of the most dissapointing driving cars i have ever driven a 19 could out run it, altough it was on the verge of needing a re build due to the rotor tips. No thanks!

the 7's are just not quick enough, but I do love them. I love the look of the E38 models.

Speed is everything. I wanted comfort I could have kept the Safrane. If the safrane had been faster I probably would have kept it.

Alpinas and Schnitzers are nice but too much money for what you get.

Driven a few beemers and every time been let down. Even by the 635csl which to be fair I think i expected a then 20 year old car to be as good as a new one.

7 series it has to be 735 and up, even then 740 is really the one I would go for. The 750 isn't really any better, the power and torque is more but theres 4 more cylinders and a lot worse fuel economy. Rather have the 540 though, smaller better handling and can shove m5 gear on it.

But building 204d4's, m62's (always from a rangie to be fair), n52's and n54 engines at least once a week has put me off BMW's tbh, don't even get me started on the crap that makes up the vag groups engines!

Brabus is silly money but theres a reason. AMG is achievable on a budget now though, just need to crack the welder out...

The rx8 is cheap, routinely sell for about 500 quid up here with worn engines. If it was a 7 I would think about it until I realized I'm not a hairdresser. The 8's I looked into buying to sell but no money in it and they are not fast or very good handling wise either.

The rx8 reminds me of the gpx fto. Doesn't fit anywhere and is no faster than a decent 19!

850's too common, also on deaths doorstep. The 40 is smaller and can be made as fast or indeed faster for less money. The 60's are about as big as I want to go although I did go look at a t5 C70 then thought my chest wig isn't big enough and I have no gold jewelry so that was out. Along with the fact its a s/v70 with a fancy bum.

Things I have pretty much ruled out, anything from Renault EXCEPT maybe, v6 lag (this is a real outside chance), 2l turbo lag, megane turbo. Won't get a saf bi turbo for good money and it can't make power, sure 300 bhp is do able but thats it really, too much work and money to get more.

Range rovers, due to how the stars lined up recently I was tooling about in a few jeeps mostly v8 rangies and X5's. They are out for the following reasons, not quick, I'm not a drug dealer and they are far to small inside. Some may enjoy having their heads stuck to the headlining I don't.

XJ12, yes I like them and they are not so much fast as consistent. A consistent accel to well over a ton and a consistent sub 20 mpg and they are all over the place, ok massive tyres and worn out suspension doesn't help but no.

Anything rover, just no.

Fords I just don't like, never really have and never really will.

Porsche 911's driven a couple and for the ones I want I'm not paying the price. 928's have shot up in value so they are out as well.

So not sure merc seems the fave at the moment despite their interiors.

I too have been looking at V8 German fare of late, there was a local 5-series in Alpina B10 4.6 V8 flavour which went for £3015 quid, and it look immaculate as well.

In fact all the V8-powered E39 5-series are going for very little these days, in relative terms at least. M5's are still making strong money though and the costs put me off.

7-series of similar age seem to be worse - I had a black 740i in my eBay watch list with TV, telephone and every other option going and it went for about £740, ironically.

Luxo barge, yes beemers are not built as hardy as they were in the early noughties, I had to have a customers 320 d 170 bhp engine rebuilt due to chain failur nd4 or summin as u mentioned.

Have you done much on the bxe vag engine our superb has the usual number two bottom end failure, you cant get your hand on a complete bxe unit can u wink wink ? Lol

we just remove the codes and use whatever. Theres little differences between the blocks.

We do it a lot

The 1.8 turbos are the same.

The engine business is very dodgy.

We rattle out pd's in mere minutes tbh.

I was also today doing a rebuild on a snapped chain 204d4 beemer lump.

Had to salvage a diesel pump sprocket from another lump as they won't pay the 255 quid for a new pulley for one.

anyone you happen to fall over.

Differences are the sumps the tensioner stud at the front and the cam sensor.

The rest is the head really.

How about a saab turbo the b204 internals are good for 350-400 bhp and its diy mappable with t5 suite. They're fairly cheap in the uk although the vauxhall crew are pushing prices up as the engine bolts to the f16/18/20/28 boxes and being used as a cheaper alternative to the c20let.
