oil leak in cylinder head gasket

In my R19 TSE 1.4, I have an oil leak which appears to be just at the front of the cylinder head gasket. When the oil level is maximum on the dip stick, the oil leaks a fair bit when the engine gets hot (which I clean up BTW after the car has been parked for a while) BUT I notice now after driving about 100 miles, and basically cruising at around 60 mph. (amost without stopping), the oil level is half full AND the leak has almost stopped. Does this mean that it would be ok just to keep the oil level at half full (or maybe a fraction less) and in this way the oil would stop leaking? Apart from the leak, the oil level always stays very constant. My mechanic has told me that it would cost about 1,000 euros to repair the leak, so it's not really an option as the car is about 19 years old). Thanks

The leaking oil may be plugging the leak, the oil leak if its from the gasket should leak all the time even at the min mark as the oil gallery is under pressure.

Its a common fault on them. Its not a hard job, sometimes re-torquing the headbolts can help. But usually the gasket is rotten.

Running the engine is fine at halfway or even down at the minimum mark.

Thanks...I'm actually on the point of scrapping the car, since I have already bought another one (A Mitsu Colt)
