Oil and Service Lights on

Hiya,

A good few weeks ago my service light came on with my oil flashing up on the dash as empty.

After checking the oil level (as best as you can in these cars with the wobbly dipstick!), and it seeming to look ok, I started the car up again and no flashing lights or service light.

This has been happening intermittently over the last few weeks - sometimes its fine and sometimes I get the oil lights flashing up as no oil.

There is no visible oil leak where I park my car every day, so i'm wondering if its a sensor that is acting up?

Wondering if anyone else has had similar problems before??

Thanks!

Em :)

Is the display saying "OK"?

When ignition has been
switched on for approximately
30 seconds:
- if the level is correct, the
display will show “oil ok”
- when the minimum oil level
is reached: the word “ok” is
no longer displayed, the
dashes and the word “oil”
flash and the SERV warning
light comes on until the
ignition is switched off.
Top up as soon as possible.

when you start the car press the end of the stalk when it says oil ok and that gives an indication (example: 0000_)of the level, I would suggest it probabaly does need a little top up

Yes either it says oil ok with all the _ _ _ _ _ showing as 0 0 0 0 0, i.e. full. OR it flashes up as _ _ _ _ _ and the service light is on.

Maybe I should try topping up just a little? The only thing that concerns me IF its a sensor malfunctioning is putting oil in if I don't need to and overfilling it... :-/

Plug an OBD reader into the ECU connector where the ashtray is and read any fault codes that may have appeared. This might tell you if a sensor is faulty.

No way...dont take it to them. Just get someone to plug into the OBD port and then read the fault code. Then get the problem fixed. Every time a light comes on I just plug the reader in and it brings up the fault code. Any good garage will have the reader. They might charge you £20 to plug it in?

Promise me you wont take it to Reno. They are rubbish.

Hmm i see, just need to find a garage near me with a reader then. Will they re-set it if its a bum reading?

I don't like the thought of going to Renault but I also don't like the thought of taking it to some backstreet garage that I don't know who they are :-/

I'll ask around... :)

The V6 is no different than any other car. I wouldnt trust my car at renault. Most of the work on mine is done in the Subaru garage across the road from where I work. They give me a discount.

Its a shame you didnt live in Hampshire. I could have diagnosed it for you.

Or buy a reader for £40 (you may be able to get them cheaper but i have this one > http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=2430). Then you can read and reset codes at your will. Handy to have IMO. Not tried it but it'd prob tell you which coil to swap etc the next time one goes.

Cheers
Peter :D

Hey I never knew you could buy them so cheap! Still gonna ask around the office and see if someone may have one though ;-)

Another question also is if I were to buy some oil to top the oil level up, what makes are reputable other than the specified Elf Excellium?

If you've done a proper visual check i.e. used the dip-stick, the car was on a level surface and the dash claimed no oil and yet there was oil in there then the issue is a sensor problem. Either check manually from now on, on a regular basis or take it to a main dealer or independent who can fix it.

There's information about the oil sensor in the technical manual...

In this specific case there's probably no need to buy an ODB reader because it's only going to tell you what you already know (or more accurately what a potentially failed sensor is telling you).

Hey Em, I've got one of the readers when I had the airbag light on. More than welcome to pop over and try it if you want. :thumb

Well as we thought, i've plugged the diagnostic machine in and it didn't come up with a fault code about the oil :( looks like i'll go book it into renault Preston to have them either clean or replace the sensor..... dammit!
