offside/right driveshaft?!

Old enough to know better
so after W.S.R. i drove home, at some point having turned left out of the main gate and gone down some country lanes my car made some worrying noises while turning.

It started off with a crunch then sounded like something was rubbing. Then the steering wheel jerked side to side while going round a roundabout and i decided to drive home very slowly. The car was fine on the straight motorway.

On getting home i had the o/s wheel off and a butchers but couldn't see anything untoward.

So i am asking are these classic driveshaft CV joint gone symptoms and if so can any one provide me with a good replacement or is the factors the way to go?!

As luck wouldn't have it i have this one but is it's for the other side!

does anyone know the make, is it ok?

and finally, how long can you drive around with a noisy d'shaft before it becomes critical?!

and you are the closest Retro chap i recon! Say, have you changed a rightside d'shaft before? Because i could use some experienced guidance, and a suitable pin punch!

well i would certainly be grateful if you could spare the part and perhaps a little time to help me fit it...

driveshafts are dead easy, first job i ever did on a car and if i can do it anyone can :p

unlikely to be serious if it goes, it will just get noisier and more lumpy. by driving you won't be damaging anything apart from itself.

However it doesn't exactly sound like driveshaft failure so I dunno

i don't want to pull off the d'shaft if it ain't that, could be steering related s'pose. will run some tests doing circles at full lock l then r and ask more q's...

Glad to hear it's easy. i been on a steep learning curve with my Renault since last October!

1.check the wheel bolts are tight.

2. The offside shaft normally gets killed on full lock either way, what happens is the inner cv pulls out and smashes into the inner, making a horrible noise and feeling.

3. Get under and have a look at the inner cv gaiter is it leaking? often it tears when this happens. Garb the inner cv or the shaft if its iff the ground and see if you can rotate the cv/shaft a lot> THE NEEDLES FALL OUT OF THE ROLLERS WHEN THIS HAPPENS>

you can fit that shaft you have on the offside but its clearly the passenger side, anyway to fit it on the drifers side you need to buy a new cv gaiter, remove the gaiter and bearing there and fit the new gaiter and refit the tripod and insert it into the old shafts inner.

drove in to work for an early start and it went while reversing into a parking bay, pic to follow, completely seperated CV joint

Chris are the 'shafts the same

i am confused as to wether i can use the 'shaft i have on the offside. The haynes manual describes the roll pins holding the o/s driveshaft on the sunwheel shaft. It looks quite different to the n/s.

I am going to go back to the 19 at work in the uno and have the wheel off and get down to it. Pics will follow!

well shafted! need to get it home really, can't use AA as too close to home and not convinced i can sort it tonight and it's going to rain!

ho hum

gonna try and slip the end back in and limp home at 10mph...actually sod that if it comes out i'll be stuffed

yeah thanks danb made that joke miself already

i am on my own, no tow rope eithe plus it'd kill my uno!

Just pulled out the shafted shaft, make towing easier and avoid more damage whilst moving.

I only replaced the inner gaitor in march for the MOT :(

That is quite impressive.

Well the easiest option is to take the new shaft to the car.

1. Loosen the hub nut
2. Remove the wheel
3. Have the car well supported as you will be going underneath
4. remove brake caliper and cable tie it up to the spring to prevent busting the hose, maybe this step is optional but I do it.
5. undo track rod end
6. undo the two strut to hub carrier bolts, note which way they point
7. go under the car and tap out the old pin
8. remove old shaft, you may already have done this
9. new shaft back on, roll pin in, dob of sealant over the ends to help prevent the pin rusting
10. lever the hub carrier out and stuff the splined half axle into the hub, being careful not to damage the gaiter
11. refitting is the reverse of removal :p

weel i took it off...

and it seems to be a different size to the one i got, ad said it was for a 16v but i dunno...

so i might still be in need of a d/s...
