No wonder I hated this BMC filter

The next part of the process involves a small bit of construction of a simple tool to aid in the re-oiling process, I found this hint out by doing a search on the internet. All you will need is a piece of clear rubber pipe, typically used in fuel lines for lawnmowers and other garden equipment, this needs to be about 30cms or 12 inches in length and a small wooden cane, again around 30cms or 12 inches in length, both of these products were found in my local hardware shop.

You then need to create the following using the items above and some duct tape, this tool will also make use of the second dispensing nozzle provided with the cleaning kit:

Using this tool allows you to easily dispense the oil deep within the filter, make sure that you apply sparingly to begin with to all of the internal contours of the filter:

As you can see I made sure to have plenty of absorbent paper towel to hand to soak up any of the oil that passed all the way through the filter gauze. To check that the filter is sufficiently coated with the oil hold it up to a light, the element should have a red/orange glow to it, as can be seen below:

For a period of around half an hour (or more if you have used to much oil) you need to lay the filter on it’s side and every five minutes rotate it, this will allow any excess oil to drain out, again make sure to have plenty of absorbent paper to hand.
Once any excess oil that was inside has drained out, you can pat the filter dry with some clean lint free absorbent paper, it is now just a case of refitting the filter in the reverse order of how you removed it in the first place.

See that bmc are now doing an oval filter.. Can't see what the benefits would be though personally over the round one?

I can't imagine there will be that much of a difference between the two products, perhaps the oval design is simply to fit in engine bays where the standard CDA wouldn't.
 
Yea that's what I thought. A guy on V6Passion has a pic of it fitted in his V6.

started cleaning mine today. Thank for the guide Will - made it a lot easier.
Leaving to dry until tomorrow and then I will reoil.

Probably, either that or a model shop as I think that Nitro RC cars run the same or similar pipes for the fuel lines in them, I only knew that my local Hardware shop sold them as my friend works there.
 
Well I decided to order the same pieces as Colin did from SiliconeHoses.com except I decided to go for Black silicone connectors rather than the blue that Matt and Colin have. Now I just need to cut the aluminium pipe and hoses down to the correct size, eek!

I did think about ordering over the phone, but it was the evening by the time I had convinced myself to buy these parts rather than construct a custom pipe from Carbon Fibre, So instead I ordered online, I can't fault their service, it was a very quick delivery.

I might need to go and buy a new Hacksaw or at least some new blades before I start lol.
 
I finished fitting it yesterday evening, thanks very much for listing the measurements Colin as it made cutting everything down a lot easier :). I will get some finished pictures uploaded soon.

On a side note whilst I have all the engine covers removed I have purchased a new fuel filter and intend to fit it myself, I don't suppose if anyone knows if its just a case of removing the speakers from behind the seats now to the fold the carpet back and allow access to the Fuel filter cover panel, or will other pieces of trim need to be removed, thanks :).

Glad you got it fitted with no dramas, out of interest...is there extremely little clearance on yours too between the filter and a part of the metal surround of the engine bay? I used a foam packer to stop any contact..works great

The actual filter housing is fine as regards not being in contact with anything, the pipe work that directs the airflow from the Side Pod to the Filter though was a pig to fit, and that does almost touch the metal surround of the engine bay, but to be honest the whole set up is so rigid now, particularly compared to before that I don't think I will have to worry about it moving.

Thanks James, I wondered whether to do it that way or to attempt it from the other direction and remove the speakers as the top covers are already off, oh well a day off tomorrow so we shall see how it goes :).
