No wonder I hated this BMC filter

On my old mk1 I had a PiperX viper kit and absolutely loved the noises, the hisses and the roar as the revs climbed,

My current vee has had a BMC on it since i bought it, and I have never really found the noise even in the same ballpark as the old PiperX was, although I remember saying to matt last year about it and he loves his, and gets the little whistles etc I was lacking, whilst mine has always knocked and rattled around in there too

So as the car is off the road now, i thought id remove all the surrounds and investigate... Here is what I found [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

completely detached from the fan itsself, and ducting ripped off

Removed completely, ducting in 3 parts, absolute shite... im horrified to have run it like this for about 1500 miles / 18 months :(

Any tips on where to buy some decent ducting? Or should i get some proper alloy pipe made up? as this foil stuff is evidently useless

eek :( that must have affected performance slightly. This is intriguing I think I shall have to have a detailed look at how mine is connected to the side pod as It was already fitted to the car when I purchased it.

Isn't there supposed to be a piece of Mechano in the kit to brace it somwhere and stop it flopping about? Piper X for me again then!

Oh no mate. Why do you make up a connection. There are pics of mine on here somewhere. Bit of silicon pipe.

Yeah that mechano kit piece was fitted, I'd removed that prior to the photos, it's not the best looking bracket in the world to be honest  I think it was knocking on the mount for the oem airbox, so I've removed that and it seems to be better braced now,

Matt that looks awesome mate! From what I can gather I need a 100mm > 80mm reducer and then a bit of samco hose or similar at 80mm diameter.. Gonna do it neat and right that's for sure, wish I'd done it sooner that's all!

I have a viper fitted pal but I don't like the idea of having alloy base plates at each end the heat soak something terrible. Was looking into a BMC as I believe carbon can manage the heat better or a piper venom kit that is meant to be a big improvement over the viper.

Only thing stopping me is the cost for no gains in reality.......

Also I would keep away from alloy pipes, I got a piece of ducting from Wallace performance for free to go from my viper the duct. The stuff is like £80 for 4 meters but if you can blag a small piece it well worth it, flexible, doesn't kink and reflects heat.

Matt where did you source your alloy pipe and silicone joins?

Hi pal,

They came with it why I bought it sorry.

I can try and get it off I'm next week or two to measure it all up for you if that helps.

Cheers.

Hey matt, no need to go to all that hassle mate thanks for the offer though, if I don't get something sorted I'll let you know... From what I can see, it needs a 100mm from the vent, reducing down to 80mm on the BMC, but due to the angle of the hole on the vent, it needs a bend or to be flexible somewhere

Offer of buying your Viper is still there if you wanna sell?? :approve:

This happens alot Colin. Seen it on several VEE's already. If you pop it back on you immediately hear the difference :)

Well as I said I would earlier in the thread I decided that as I have the week off work [smilie=yay.gif], I would remove the engine covers using the very helpful guide on here and see what the fitment of my BMC CDA is like, the result of what I found can be seen in this picture below:

2pyyesn.jpg

Now if you know your BMC CDA air filters then you will know that they clearly say "Air Flow side" and "Engine Side" unfortunately whomever fitted this clearly didn't know what they were doing as they have fitted the kit the wrong way round .

This diagram shows how when fitted correctly the filter should work:

p3lnr.jpg

And this little edit gives you some idea on what will have been happening to the air flow inside my filter housing (the black arrows represent how the air was being sucked into the filter):

654hvm.jpg

Effectively the airflow has been heavily restricted by being caught in the wrong side of the flow deflector, debris has still been caught by the filter (albeit on the wrong side effectively) so I don't need to worry about anything having got into the engine that shouldn't have but it does mean that the performance should be increased once I refit the BMC CDA the correct way round (note: I will be cleaning the filter thoroughly before I do this with the correct chemicals supplied by BMC and then re oiling it).

As regards the pipe work which is what I originally wanted to check, it is in an ok state, certainly not decayed or damaged in the same way as Colin's was, however I feel that I can improve on this and am looking into creating a neater and better solution to that which is already on there.

Will see how I get on with an alternative before I sell but as with the last deal you will get first refusal mate.

Hi will, can't believe our bad luck with these filters!

I've ordered up my new pipe work and should have it tomorrow! Wasn't cheap at £70 but its all in the details! Should be identical to matts when I get it fitted 8)

Cheers for the help Matt :approve:
