My TL Light Restoration

The wheels I am sending you will look the nuts against gold, buy some 175/50/13's and it will set the car off!!!!

Nice to have a proper ramp to work on

Thanks Filippo :D I cant wait. Thanks for your help with bits.
I have already bought some Michelin 155/70's, the standard ATMO size I believe? I like the look of skinny tyres really, although I couldn't bring myself to put 135's on there!!!!

I'm considering a white roof at some point.... Maybe.... Or a high gloss black roof. Just to break-up the mass of gold/beige!

(Yeah, I'm VERY lucky to have use of a ramp. I have lots of respect for classic car owners who don't have it so easy)

Spent a few days on the car this weekend. just about ready for the MOT....

It is currently sitting on some old ATMO wheels (I only have 3 of them) and a Steel with an old racing dunlop on...

Spot the ebay stickers :D

The headlining is the best thing about the car. Its great!

i162.photobucket.com_albums_t266_samfishy_IMG_2190.webp

I have a TS silencer under the wing, but couldnt get hold of another exhaust, so had to bodge the TL peashooter back on. I made an aluminium heatshield, it keep the inner wing alot cooler!

I need the correct wheel nuts for the ATMO wheels as soon as possible. If anybody has a set they can post ASAP, that would be great!

The car is on the Road!!!!

I fitted another silencer at the back (quick fix) and it passed the MOT. So much is now new, including the two pulley belts. Another distributer is being rebuilt for reliability. All the service items are new.

It drives very well, and is actually quite fast. It cruises easily at 70mph, although it is quite affected by the wind. I did the tracking and set it to 10 minutes toe out on the front and the 20 minutes toe in on the rear.

I fitted some fergats until some ATMO's are refurbished, although the steels are growing on me. I found a delivery note still attached on the inside of one of the wheels!

I have a NOS 'Mike Haynes racing' chin spoiler, as fitted to the TS 'cup' cars. Im going to fit it to help stability on the motorway...

Nice one - a really nice restoration there. Must be satisfying to have the car on the road.

Are R5s normally really bad at crosswinds? It does sniff of tracking - what are the book values? Only time I've been worried about crosswinds in the R4s it's been tracking front or rear or the dampers were completely knackered.

I don't like the Fergats or Gordini wheels :D love the headlining though.

Hi,
Thanks. Its great to drive. Steering doesnt centre very well though, so cant let the wheel run through your hands....

Its not moving much in the wind to be honest, so probably normal.
Not sure what the book value are, I will have to check. I went off what my dad suggested.

What wheels do you have on your R4/R5? :)

I like the Fergats because they look original'ish (being steel), but are wider....

Book of Haynes has the front at 1 to 5mm toe out up to 1979 and 0 to 2mm toe out after 1979. For the rear 0 to 4mm toe in. (5mm would be 25 minutes on each wheel if I can remember the sums properly).

My R5 has TX wheels (it's a TX). I've always run the 4s on standard wheels but a lot of R4 people put the bigger R5 wheels on - it's just personal preference.

Got the car to south-west france. Covered 700+ miles and average 43mpg at 75-80 mph. Very happy. Very comfortable!
Although the next day the alternator gave up. Turned out to be on its last legs anyway. Fortunately there is a mechanic opposite and lots of R5 bits in france so it was fixed next day. I went for a re-manufactured unit instead of second hand.
Ended up costing 210euros including fitting. Not too bad, but still lots of money!
Annoying because I probably have 3 or 4 of them at home, and can get one rebuilt for around £60....

There is a classic car show in this village on Sunday, so Ill take the R5 along. Already met a few of the locals of have lots of french classics stashed away! Pug 304 convertable, 100's on Citroen 2CV's etc etc

That's a long trip so soon after restoration - nice one. Do post photos of the show.

Looking at the earlier photos was the spare wheel originally black? I've had a Gordini and the TX here and neither had a spare wheel at all - were they all fitted with standard wheels for spares?

My spare was black, although not very shiny :)

Got back from france in the TL last night. It is made for the motorway! The gears are so long that it easily cruises at 80mph.
I got 43mpg on an 80mph cruise. And it averaged around that for about 1900miles. Very happy, as the only reliability problem was the alternator - despite really heavy traffic around Paris in 28 degrees heat. Although the clutch is now a bit tired.
The car now reads over 41,000 miles.

I only saw 4 other mk1 R5's for the whole time I was in France. Mine didnt get much attention (to be expected really), although I would find some old chaps hovering around it most times I left it in a car park.

I did find a fairly ratty TS (the first I have ever seen on the road). It was in poor condition, but just had a new exhaust on it. My girlfriend thought i was pretty sad after taking a picture underneath!!!!!

It was great to go to a French car show and see something different. Lovely people.
The village was Savignac.
From there we went to Arcachon on the west coast (massive Sand dune - A wonder of the world surely?...... and then to La Rochelle and the 'Ile de Re' - Recommended!

the gt turbo looks ok in the pix!

the van is one of my favourites - its an Renault Estafette

1.4 mid mounted under the floor.

its funny you say about the citroens being popular, i went to a classic show in Arras northern france, with antony - the yellow r17 with the fuego turbo lump in, and literally all the spares for sale were for citroens!

I managed to shear a driveshaft this week! Just before it enters the splines behind the hub. It has taken quite a twist through it.
My Dad said he has never seen one fail before though.
I was accelerating (if you can call it that  ) on some uneven tarmac (Isn't it all!).
Luckily we had an unused reconditioned driveshaft in the shed, so I stuck that on.

Still interesting in any brake upgrades :)

I got hold of some Koni's today. They have been re-valved for racing... the softest setting is very stiff and the hardest takes all my weight to get it to move very slowly. I reckon they will feel SOLID when on the car, maybe too hard. i could always get them re-valved and serviced again.
I also have some Gordini torsion bars that are paired and labelled L/R.

I was also told that the earlier front suspension set-up had more caster and heavier steering - but more feel. This was changed to make it easier to park in the later models.
I should be able to get hold of the earlier wishbones and steering rack to put on at a later date. He also has some of the caster shims used in the TS race series. It may wear the tyres quicker, but I dont mind.

Hopefully with the above fitted and the car lowered a touch, it should handle quite well.
I have noticed it getting more attention recently, although that could be the big hole in the exhaust.

Spent a bit of money before the MOT tomorrow.

Fitted a new centre exhaust section. It is perfect, and fits well. I have a temporary silencer on the rear while a TS one (to match the system) comes from Germany.

I have fitted the Gordini Turbo rear torsion bars which has made a nice difference (standard TL front and Turbo dampers all round). Looking forward to fitting the fronts.

Ordered some Ferodo DS2500 race/track pads which where around £80, but I imagine with halve my motorway stopping distances!

I am off into France again in September, so should add another 1000+ miles.

I am currently looking for some Koni Dampers (these have been revalved just a bit too hard) and a rear anti roll bar and fittings.

Still getting 45mpg which is handy after all that!
