turns out the other box was a much better option anyway in both looks and noise.

Went to do the rear brakes but I think it’s going to turn into full replacement up to atleast the flexis on the rear axle so didn’t bother untill I have those aswell, need to order them still.

cheers 👍🏼

A further 8 weeks with no handbrake,

I did buy flexis and set about swapping the rear brakes and lines on Saturday.

Ticked over 70k this week, I’ve done about 1000 miles in the car. Largely hassle free apart from its shit at hot starting. And on Friday it just began running like a bag of shit and cutting out all over the place.

so at the weekend I whipped the carb off for a clean out, new vaccume lines put on, traced the major issue to be the vaccume advance diaphragm has split and is letting air in.
Got a diaphragm ordered up, and traced a misfire that’s cropped up recently to a worn dissy/rotor

now this has new brakes all round, new suspension all round, wipers, drop links, ball joints
Maybe even track rod ends too. it’s had a service,

it needs decent wheels and tyres! And a coolant flush and thermostat.

the arch lips on this are deep, and I can afford to cut a fair amount of it away. Which should give me enough space to use the old faithful set.. So after 6 ish years of ownership I decided to give them a little Tlc. It was just a little, through the week after work.

These will go well on the car, fill the arches nice,
Just need to get some tyres sorted out.

new coolant bottle arrived today so should get a flush done and proper coolant in before the frost really sets in.

immediate next buys are -
Dizzy and rotor, leads
Tyres
Blower motor (I have no fan speeds)
Sri clocks
Sri steeringwheel

Paint 🤷🏼‍♂️

cheers,

Oldskool tsw evos are absolutely the right choice. Them old 8v lumps are pretty bulletproof, use a bit of oil but prob run forever

Those wheels have come up well.

When I bought my gt turbo it had a set of those on it, I swapped them for the wheels that are in most of the pictures in my project thread with a guy in Dingwall, who had a nova, he then sold them to his wife’s cousin who had them on a golf.

I had a bit of a headache with this car for about three weeks, it was misfiring on start up and running generally like a bag of balls.

started replacing ignition bits that I hadn’t at servicing before it went on the road. Put a new ignition amp on it and cleaned the carb a million times, in the end I couldn’t get rid of a hunt at idle, tried to remove a pressed in idle emultion tube from the carb and essentially broke it beyond repair. So I got another off of a nova SR, put it on, set up the auto choke and jobs a good un’!

so the car got the coolant system flushed, fresh antifreeze and new bottle. Ran it for three weeks, no issues, apart from I still don’t have a blower motor and it really is getting cold now.

decided to book a week off of work and invest a bit on money from selling the Clio into this.

when time came to paint the Renault 5 I subbed it out to a mate because I had put a lot of time and effort into the car and couldn’t be bothered going through the painting saga myself.
With the Astra however I’ve been using it a good while now after putting in the initial welding work etc. So I decided that was the job for my time off work.

finished work on Friday, drove the car into my new workshop on Saturday and have been putting shifts in the past three days.

making good progress, and on track to get painted before the week is out.

It’s been a pretty full on stint since last sat.
It’s by no means perfect, but red was the main goal.

couldn’t bring myself to crack on with a full day today, too tired, too wet outside, too cold.
caught up in some sleep, watched some shite tv and went and demasked the car a couple of hours ago.

next step is to get the door seals etc back in and the thing sealed to a point I can push it outside and get the shed raided up a bit before rebuilding and getting the engine cleaned up a bit ready for going back in.

fabulous the grinch GIF

So it’s not been cut and polished yet. I want to leave it enough time to harden up properly before I do that.

having a working heater motor has transformed the car if nothing else.

still got an Sri steering wheel and Sri clocks to go in, it needs a good valet, I’ll do all that at the same time.

but it’s rebuilt, and it looks a million times better. Job jobbed as far as I’m concerned, it’s 30 years old, and it’s far from being pink.
well happy
