Mk1 / Ph1 Mégane Cabriolet F4R-t conversion

Well my best mate saved the day.
His Mrs works for DHL. She managed to grab the parcel off the driver before he went home and he dropped it round yesterday afternoon for me.🤙

Popped up to mam and dad's, fitted it up and she runs. Whey!

Stopped and started it maybe 10 times and it's going strong. So I'll be bringing it home today. Well chuffed.

Fingers crossed it's working for good now.

So far so good.
We've had around 30 clean starts now. And done about 20 miles in it.
Will press on to get a few hundred miles on it, and then the shiney bits can be bought! :D

Now I need to start tacking the teething problems.
The main one is, engine temp.
It's running at 100c+ as soon as it's warmed up, and it doesnt come back down either.
Doesn't boil over which is good. But it likes to run hot. Moving, or stationary.
It doesn't overheat in traffic. But because it runs so hot, the fan is constantly on.

Water pump is working because I can see strong flow in the header tank.
Stat is removed so it's not that.
Getting hot air inside through the matrix also, so it's defo flowing.
And it's not head gasket because the water system isnt over-pressurising either.

It was mentioned earlier in this thread. And I'm drawn towards it being the rad. Aftermarket, and maybe cant offer the cooling properties.

Also, engine moves. A LOT.
So engine mounts (Will have to be custom made), are top of the list too.
Bulk head now has a nice dent in it from the turbo! haha

Good to hear the immob issues are sorted.

I would fit the megane 225 rad in to cure the cooling issues if it will go.

Been using the car today for a few hours. Stop start in traffic. Been to the motorfactors to pay my bill (35 mile ish round trip)
Even got a little bit brave and went up the motorway for a blast.
Wound it on in 5th to 105mph (On this private air field I found of course!)
Engine sounded like it was screaming. No tacho yet so cant see what RPM was doing, but I guess the JB3 Valver gearbox is probably quite short ratio in comparison to the PK6 that was in the Laguna.

We've got about 30/40 clean starts under out belt now so it's looking good.
I've noticed that if I jump in the car and just start it, without a pause between 2nd stage ignition, and crank. It just cranks over for a second or so longer.
I guess the emulator codes in that first few seconds when it's powered up. So I've been trying to remember to start it like you would a Diesel, and just pause before cranking.

Heating issue sorted out. I just did this magic thing and it kinda sorted it's self out. mmm. Yep, moving on! :P

I've ordered a new rear gearbox mount. Going to get a round block of delrin or something hard machined to fit into it, and drill / sleeve it to make a solid rear mount.
Engine movement on boost is insane.

Clutch slip is a bit intermittent. Sometimes it slips in 2nd. Sometimes I can power on in 4th or 5th and have no slip. It's odd.
It is a second hand flywheel, drive plate, and cover plate, all off different cars though, so I guess has a bit o bedding in to do.
When the engine and box come out over winter for a refresh, I'll be uprating the clutch anyway. And having the flywheel reground while its out.

Will be visiting powerflow next month for a custom exhaust making up. They are the only people locally who can bend 2.5" stainless.

I'm also very tempted to fit epas, or an electric pump for my rack.
The steering isnt so much heavy. But it's just not nice when cornering. Like it really wants to pull straight on roundabouts etc. I'm wondering if I can maybe adjust the castor angle to reduce the pull.

Cheers Neal!

In my somewhat defense, when I bench tested it all, I had it all correct. Obviously ballsed up when putting the pins into the plug on the fan.
Somebody even suggested it further back in this thread, but I was so sure it wasn't that, because I'd already had it fitted and running, just with twisted together stripped wires. Doh!

Surreal how much it affects the general wind cooling when on a run though. The fan will obviously kick in from time to time because the old K7M is set to run at 88-90 I think. Where as it seems the Laguna is made to run a little hotter naturally.

And as soon as that fan cut in, it become a downwards slope and gradually got hotter and hotter.

I did another 50 odd miles in it today again, all problem free. :D

Hahaha excellent - I remember one of my mates did the same and couldnt figure out why it ran hotter with the fan on than fan off when on track. Its one of those stupid things nobody wants to admit to doing. like refilling the engine oil without putting the sump plug back in first!

It's frustrating because I was so certain of getting it correct when mocking up the loom. 🤦‍♂️

Is there any way to identify which JB3 box I have in there? The tag was missing when I bought it so I don't know for certain what ratio it is.

I'll be buying and refreshing another box for when it comes back apart for a tidy up and belts / clutch.
I'd like something with slightly taller gearing in 4th and 5th.

The box that's in it seems to be awesome in 2nd and 3rd.
First is almost a crawler gear. 🤣
And it screams it's bollocks off in 4th and 5th at between 70 and 100mph.
I know I don't want to be setting land speed records in it but is like to be able to sit at a comfortable 80/90 in it if poss. 👀

I'm yet to brave up and plug in my obd so can't say what rpm it's doing at a given speed to work out the ratios.

I'm gonna have to plug it in sooner or later. 🤣
