5 GT Turbo MartijnG - 5 GT Turbo

Since I'm watching this forum for quite a while now, I thought it was time to finally introduce myself.

Another Dutch guy, currently living in the Rotterdam area. Owned my current 5 GT Turbo from 2008 and started restoring it in 2010. Took me around 5 years to 'complete', although it's never ever done. But in 2015 the car finally was back on the road since 2002.

Started out as a bare shell:

For a '86 car, minimum welding was necessary (lucky me).

After welding, delivered it to the bodyshop:

While having issues with choosing the new color of the car, I started of with the collection of new parts (big thanks to CGB for that):

Eventually (after many months) I chose the color and the engine bay + inside of the car was sprayed. The outside of the car was only primered to prevent any damages during the rest of the rebuild:

The GTT came back home and I started with the build; All new brake lines, powdercoated subframe and rear beam, new brakes all round, polybushed subframe etc. etc. Nothing is untouched:

New roof liner in alcantara and flocked interior panels:

farm5.staticflickr.com_4297_36048974435_06ffa27e88_z.webp

All the detail work started to bore me, so eventually started with the full rebuild of the C1J:

farm5.staticflickr.com_4320_36007257676_315dbb5edc_z.webp

Dropped it in the engine bay:

Ended up in this horrendous snake-pit:

Fitting back the dashboard with its new loom and fired the engine up for the first time and succesfully completed its break-in. So it was off to the bodyshop again:

Color applied (R35 GTR):

Time for the rewarding work, putting the car together:

Carb rebuild #1 (of many):

Bucket seats and more interior work:

And finally back on the road again, attending the first meeting in many years:

After breaking in the engine for ~1000km and many (many) minor breakdowns (mainly carb related) it was time to start enjoying the car.

Eventually got to setting up the carb and booked the car in for a first dyno run in 2016:

Last month did my second dyno run with the carb converted to a 'Gr. A' venturi and put out ~166whp / 247Nm.

Next up is to solve the massive oil leakage from the sump / chain cover (already attempted 2 times so not much motivation for it left now) and looking for upgrades to reach some more HP. For now, I'm leaving the carb as is. Next thing must definitely be EFI-ing the C1J or swap for a F4R (already standing by) and turbo that. Just a matter of time and €'s I guess.

Will keep you guys updated!

Hi @MartijnG!

What a fantastic build and beautiful car you have! I love those BBS wheels you've got fitted, never seen those on a 5 before. Remind me of the old Hockenheim wheel from TSW in the UK... (eh @Mart )

Great attention to detail and a beautiful build mate, Love what you've done with the plush headlining, im thinking about doing something similar on my R11??

Like what you did to stage the paintwork, inside first, then assemble, then outside to avoid scratches. Good Idea, but in my experience, I'd be afraid of losing the car to the bodyshop for more months...

Sorry to hear you are having the old leaking sump troubles.. @Kris M recently tried to solve his leakages and I believe is still struggling.. I think the secret is cover everything with sealant and then when you are sure everything is covered... cover it some more!! :ca:

Steve

Looks great. For more power cam upgrade would be high on the list :)

Currently fitted with a Piper Cam 285 (standard timing). Together with the T25 (stage 3 Turbo Technics) I believe there are not many power gains options other than EFI or swap. Don't get me wrong, this power brings enough smiles to my face :) Just taking a look into the future to keep me motivated to keep the 5.

Thanks Steve! BBS's will eventually return on the car. Currently fitted with 165/45R16 Nankang s#% tires, so need to sort out some new rubber. Also need to source genuine BBS hub rings to 60.1.

Regarding the staging of the paintwork, you are correct. The GTT stayed forever and ever at the paintshop to get it done. The first stage was taking forever, I believe it was over 6 months (car was worked on between other jobs to save some of the cost). The final respray maybe took around 2 months. Did not bother me, needed some time to recover my funds :) I just wanted to be done right so now rushing, and it paid out in the end.

The sump leakage is really annoying me tbh, complete underside of the car covered in Castrol by now. Gonna take one other go at it with massive amounts of sealant and will see if it helps. It is difficult to see from which point it is leaking the most so also gonna take the timing chain cover off and re-seal it.

How much boost pressure currently ? Turbo upgrade to T28 or GT25 and 1.5-1.6 bar should see 230hp @flywheel - 200hp @ the wheels. I would change the grp a carb for a stock sized venturi and rejet to suit

Currently running on 1.2 bar after the carb (~1.4 bar before carb). Unfortunately don't have the specs of this T25 turbo from Turbo Technics so don't know at which boost this turbo is comfortable with. Converted to Gr. A venturi in an attempt to decrease restriction from the carb, but jetting is awfull. Any examples on here with standard venturi and high boost / HP?

This is my extra van - c1j - stock venturi jetted to suit - 1.6bar on gt2560r - piper 285 timed to my spec..20160904_220153.webp 20160904_215807.webp

I've accepted oil leaks is part of owning a GTT, even after my engine build I've still got a little oil leak somewhere. I've checked everything but I still can't track it down. It was a annoying at first but it's so minimal I just forgot about it.

Even the other day during MOT we were under mine and still couldn't track it down. The odd thing is the car never really needs topping up, probably once a month if that.

Can anyone help me with EFI intake manifold options for the C1J? I read the for sale thread of @jake but I have my doubts about the standard manifold diameter underneath the throttle body. Also read the thread of @Mark Davis which uses a MT manifold, but unfortunately do not know wat MT stands for? Are these manifolds still available? Another option is to manufacture from scratch but prefer a fitted and tested option instead of throwing a lot of € to a random metalshop (if I can find one).

Any help is welcome :)

IMG_5823.webp Hi Martin,

The MT manifolds just refer to a chap called Michael Tierney who makes manifolds using the OE inlet, chopped and then welded with a top section and the machined to take a volvo throttle body. They are ok to get people started and reasonably cheap - approx £300-£350. I did make around 250hp with it so not all bad I guess.

My advice to you is to get in touch with Matt Rowley of Fusion Fabrications, not sure if he is on here. Probably is, he can make you a custon inlet and fuel rail which is much much better. This is what I will be picking up tomorrow.

I hope that helps.

Are the MT manifolds still available you think? Does he have a website or something to get in contact?

The manifold that you are getting looks very awesome, but was somewhere in the 700 pounds range I believe? Well worth the money I guess but I still want to look at all available options.

Yes I believe he has made another batch recently and claims it will be his last for a while. He advertises on the enemy website from what I can tell ;-) . They who must not be named !! lol

I could probably get you an email address for him? But my advice is save the extra money and buy one from Matt.
