Major oil leak - around oil cooler area???

G

Guest

Hey,

There's been a slow oil leak for a while now. Had a quick look underneath, and thought it as coming from the sump plug washer.

Went about changing the oil today, and cleaned it all up. Changed the filter too, incase it was coming from there and running down.

I put new oil in, started her up - and she's still leaking oil. It's a reasonable amount as well. I've been going from max to min on the in car gauge in less than a week.

I had a look when it was on the stands, and the oil leak is coming from the block somewhere. It looks like it's coming from somewhere under the oil cooler sandwich plate. The oil filter itself looks to be sealing perfectly. I can't see exactly where it is because i can't see enough.

I'm basically just wondering if anyone else has had this trouble before? Also, if i have to take the sump off to re-seal it, can i do this with the engine in and gearbox on?

Or do you think it could be coming from the dipstick? Ideas.......

Cheers guys,

Al :-)

Could it be the oil level sensor? Dipstick tube?

They're the only things around that area that could cause an oil leak i think, unless your sump is leaking.

Possibly yeah - don't think it's the sump, 'coz could see around where it sealed, and it looked ok to me. It looks like it's coming from above. Doesn't leak really when its turned off, so i'm assuming the pressure generated from the oil pump is forcing it out through somewhere.

I'm going to be doing some investigating on sunday, as i'm away all tomorrow. Always comes at the wrong time - i've got assignments coming out of my arse for work at the moment!!!

You reckon something isn't screwed in tight? Or will i need some sort of sealant?

What you need to do is inspect it properly.

Wip the bonnet off
wip slam panel off
wip radiator out
wip grill off

This will allow you to take a proper look at whats causing the leak. Clean everything up and shine a torch around. You should be able to see where the leak it coming from if its as bad as you say it is. If its the cooler then take it off and renew seals or buy a new one. Oil sensors might need tightening or re sealing.

Right, we're getting somewhere!

Did all the above today - but took the radiator and shizzle out the way. Took all the sensors out, the timing bolt out, and took the cooler off, which i might add wasn't even connected to the water circuit!

Looking at where it was coming from, and looking at the back of the cooler, it looks like it IS leaking from where the cooler seals to the block. Only problem is, it only leaks when it's running, so i might do this, put it back together, and find the same problem. I doubt i will though to be honest, as there was a load of shit under where it connects to the block.

Please see parts wanted section!!!!!

might just be the cooler was loose...

just fit a new seal unless the cooler has rusted though..
