Look out, another Gearbox Question!

Hi all.

I'm currently in a financial position to get our ropey Gearbox changed for a Ph2 Box and at the same time get the Cam belt etc done by Scott.

I can't remember where I saw it written, but someone on here recently said the Renault Breakers in Accrington had some refurbed Ph2 boxes for £650. Before I start a confab with them, has anyone had dealings with these guys?

Think these boxes were being offered with a 6 month warrantee; would that on its own, set alarm bells ringing with anyone?

If they say themselves that they offer a "warrantee", then that means nothing, some sort of a cross between warranty and guarantee it implies, but it's probably neither! Ph2 boxes aren't amazing either (read some of the recent threads) I'd love to put something different and stronger in mine....

SPIKE, Russo, Fred have had quite a few dealings with them and good reports from what I read. MATT is no stranger on Cliosport, I've known him on the forum for many years.

james, my dealings were only calls, with a lot of dissapointment. i get the feeling that the majority of gearbox repairers only fix whats broke, they do not strip the clusters to get rid of any schrapnel and get the box out the door as quick as poss. thats the reason i am looking for a box to get it over to a firm i have dealings with for a proper full overhaul.

I think if you speak to Scott at SG he will also tell you that dealings with this breaker isn't great...

Think about it a mk2 box is 500 quid if your lucky do you really think they recon the box for 150 extra at 650?

Hi woody, been to the office / workshop at Accrington breakers and to be honest don't see them as specialist gearbox servicing ( in my eyes ) They mainly deal with breaking cars and selling the parts. Would rather buy an 'unserviced' gearbox with no guarantee and get it looked at by someone with knowledge and experience. Only my thoughts.
I was once told by the lads in breakers yard that the owner bought up a load of new engines and boxes when production of the vee stopped and put them in storage. No idea of how true this was but might be worth a call.

Sounds like your garage Russo ;)

Sorry for going slightly off topic

After giving this some more thought, be very aware that most gearbox rebuilders will warrant the work but the cost of removal and replacement is down to YOU. great in a mk1 fiesta but not so good in a v6 clio!
this is a good reason for finding someone reliable to rebuild these, and trust me, it will not be cheap if its done properly. how much is a box from reno?
various comments on here were quoting £650, i rang and got that price and that was plus vat!....£780 ouch!

They only take an hour or so to remove so probably not too dissimilar to a Mk1 fiesta other than the fact the Mk1 fiesta is probably stronger ;)

Hi all.

Cheers for all your replies. Spike, I'll PM you shortly. TBH I'm not getting a warm feeling about the aforementioned breakers! Spoke to Scott and he said a Renault box is around £1400. Phil, how much was your box to have repaired? and how deep did they go?

Woody, just to clear things up I've never had a gearbox from the Accy breakers just quite a few parts LOL. My only observation was that I don't think they specialise in box rebuilds so wouldn't want you getting your fingers burnt ( if you know what I mean )
If I was in your situation and buying a reconditioned box off them then I would be asking a lot of questions and getting some guarantee in writing.
All the best pal.

Sorry Phil, I worded that all wrong. Did you have yours done by Motec recently?

Different Phil here!

I had mine done by Motec recently. It cost £250 for removing and refitting the 'box, £550 for work on the gearbox which involved replacement of all of the bearings and re-shimming and £250 for a new clutch and slave cylinder (made sense to change it while the 'box was out). Total £1050.

The problem with mine was that one of the bearings on the 3rd/4th shaft was on its way out and was making a fair bit of noise. Luckily it had not seized completely (caught it just in time) and hence there was no damage to the casing. So not as bad as it might have been.

Be aware that Motec can't do the work on the PK6 themselves because it needs some fancy kit to rebuild it properly and so they use a specialist. The work is guaranteed for 12 months/12k miles for what it' s worth.

Have you had a chat with Scott yet Woody? Third gear on my bastard box is still fooked and currently thinking what to do. Be good to know whether rebuild is an option. Still thinking transplant. Wish I was mechanically minded!! [smilie=doubt.gif]

i am still trying to get hold of a faulty box to get rebuilt, i have a couple of guys on standby that have lots of experience with sequential boxes, they said they would have a look at this for me.

Yes, I spoke to Scot. I'm planning on a new box from Renault at around £1700 (VAT included) and also replacement belts, w/pump, new clutch etc. Comes in at around £3700! Planning on getting it done next year now. We are around £1200 short at the mo hahahaha. That said, if a second hand Ph2 box shows its face, I may opt to buy it and get it refurbed.
