Just decat with oem system

Would you get a worth while gain with just a decat and stock system? Also I would expect it to be a bit noiser, would that be the case?
 
Noisier and you may get some gain given that the density of the cats is such that they do impede the gas flow.

If it's a Mk1 your problems are more at the induction end rather than exhaust and substantial changes at either end can be expensive and are likely to need a 3rd party ECU with accompanying mapping charges in order to really get any benefit.
 
Hmm... so the airbox is fairly restrictive on a phase 1 then? I need to search this then. I wouldn't mind a little more noise from the exhaust so even if I only really gain noise it's cheaper than a backbox if they don't free up much power. Would it be likely to gain or lose tourque tho?

With my past cars i've found decats to give the most hp for £ as it's such a chep thing to be able to do so I think i'll give it a shot. Then i'll get saving for the manifold and back box/system.
 
It's what happens after the afterbox that's the main issue; small(ish) throttle body and then poor design of plenum.

Difficult to know whether you'll gain or lose torque to be honest (I'm no expert!). The best way to find out for sure would be to rolling road the car before and after and on the same day if you can (and definitely at the same rolling road).
 
Ah well i've not got time and money to start playing with TB and plenums, I bought this car on the principle I wouldn't modify as it's mad already :D

Maybe a freer flowing air filter and decat for now will do. I'll leave the exhaust until I want more noise later on :D
 
Does anyone know a place to get a decat that'll fit fine with the stock system?
