I bought this cam (unseen) ages ago and have just had a look and it's not in the best shape but is it OK?
The lobes are wearing a bit but it's got some fairy deep scratches on it? It's an e or ep cam bought for b18ft so not that easy to come by
What you reckon?
Thanks for the bump Andy. It's more a general cam question rather than a b18ft one. Will the scratches cause issue? I don't think they will polish out you can feel groove with finger nail. Not sure how they got there as it was well packaged?!
This is one of those times where the saying 'Try at your peril' springs to mind. Now any cam from any car can be expected to some light scoring. Its the nature of the part. But deep scoring like that, paricularly on the cam lobes, cause cause excesswear to the cam followers.
Personally, i would steer clear. But is up to you at end of the day
The lobes look like they've seen better days but not knackered. I wouldn't worry about scratches on the lobes unless there's ridges rather than grooves. It's where the cam is clamped down that's more my concern, again, grooves not so bad only ridges. Polishing the scratches out would involve taking further metal off and altering lobe so only remove high spots
It's not ideal, but depends on what the car is used for too, if it's just for a cheap power upgrade its less critical than a race engine so it's a personal/budget decision, assuming you can't find another for about £50 or don't fancy a piper regrind from it for about £120
It was fitted to reggy5 that cam, his engine was rolling road tested for to 230bhp with upgraded turbo, injectors etc all of which I bought so it's a cheap upgrade kind if but that said the car is a keeper and I don't want have keep pulling it apart. Rather have a proper job. I would be ok paying piper £120 for regrind if that's a better job. Do you think they will have a higher lift profile for b18ft? Or where good place get another cam as gtx, e, ep and maybe rsi (does that fit any others? ) aren't so common.
Any of the above cams, Renault tend to be a tad wilder than Volvo iirc.
Piper will give you a few improved options for your intended use going on what they have in front of them, as there's a lot more lobe on those compared to ft cams, including if they think it's scrap.
Only postage costs to find out.
Bare in mind that if you're not using standalone the e cams already want to rev to 6450 and the oe ecu's are limited to 6250
