INTAKE SPACERS

Spike

New Member
A few months ago there was a discussion about intake spacers for a mk2 and if these were worth making or having made. well this morning in the post arrived some of these that i have had made, they are a similar shape to the gasket 16mm thick, and fit at the gasket face between the two halves of the plenum.
the question at the time was , "will these work, and if so what performance increase is there?" well ray had some made and fitted and he assures me that there was an increase of 3 - 4 bhp just using these alone, he has told me he has the dyno sheets from TDF to back this up. anyone who knows ray will realise he is not one to exagerrate or mince his words, so i will take this as gospel.
when you look at the design of the plenum it is easy to see how this spacer can help, the lid sits too close to the top of the bellmouth and destroys what is known as "fuel standoff" , obviously as most things the inlet is made down to a price and this is a consequence of this "bean counting".
the only difference between these and the ones ray had made is these are 16mm and rays were 10mm, i felt that there was still room for improvement (bigger area) and this still leaves approx 10 mm of space under the cover. i can get the thinner ones made but only in 12mm and i have not got any at the mo.
i have put these in the parts for sale section. (engines).
oh, and i await your comments.

I have my usual keen to learn technical stuff questions.

If I bought a socket set of some sort, could I fit these myself?
Is it just a case of unscrewing some bolts, lifting of the old gasket, and swap over?
What is there to go wrong doing this job? (apart from pulling a back muscle) :)

Do they replace gaskets item 22 in this picture?

Top question, and , yes, yes, yes.
they go in the same place as the gasket with a gasket either side.
the top is fastened on with 12 of 5mm bolts, these have a 8mm hex (same as coils so you probably have one), you also need to disconnect the intake hose with flatblade screwdriver, and also drop the plug from the throttle body, all thats left is to remove the breather pipes that clip on the front of the manifold and the plug on the map sensor, then bingo.
as for the gaskets there are two ways of doing this, first is carefully remove the old ones and reuse also order two from reno for the other side, or two, dont bother with the gaskets and use a sealant like locktite or threebond instant gasket, taking care not to use too much and swamp the job, but just enough to seal.
i cannot see why this could take more than an hour if properly prepared.
obviously you will need to use longer bolts but i am in the process of sourcing these at the moment and will include these in the first two as a kit.
the last question depends on how confident you are, as the most obvious problem is dropping something in the works, and yes it has been done, and makes a very expensive mess if you then try and start the engine.
whilst on the subject james, do you have a part number and price for the gaskets, i feel this would be the best way to go if you wern't confident using sealants.
of course it goes without saying that if you are not happy or confident in doing this yourself, ask one of the other more technical members to help, or go to a garage.

Great answers to help us. Thanks SPIKE :approve:

I just found a rather yucky picture of what I think are these gaskets?

YEP, THATS EM!, YUK!
The spacers fit on top of whats pictured with another gasket/sealant, then the lid.
at a cost of £120 +vat for gaskets sealant is in order, after all there is nothing/ no fluid to leak out.
p.s. the black oily stuff should be in the engine, not the manifold.
