Idle and Starting probs

ok, drove my car back form luton to bimringham. Drove fine. I went to work the next morning (11 mile drive) i get 1o mins away and it cuts out going round and island. had a recovery bloke out and he said its over fueling and i need a new carb.

Got a new carb, and it wouldnt idle what so ever and start when it wanted too. It would only start if i hold down the accelerator whilst turning the key.

had a few people out to look at it and so far ive changed:

carb
throttle body
Throttle cable
throttle position sensor
Idle stepper motor
coil pack
HT leads
Spark plugs
New gaskets for inlet manifold, throttle body and carb
distributer cap

and still no joy

i went out this morning and tried to start it and now the NEW carb is over-fuelling. the same problem the last one had. so whats causing it?

when i UNPLUG the red connector to the single point injector (so no fuel goes down the throttle body) the ca will start and idle fine untill it runs out of fuel.

so i tried it again and it started and idled and then i plugged in the red connector and it cut out instantly. Ideas??

im baffled.

could be an ecu fault as it contrls how much fuel its chucking in also the fpr could be at fault

check the lambda on the exhaust aswell

havent got a lambda sensor mate. its been de-catted and not one on that i can see.

whats an FPR?

and yeah a few people have said the ECU but if it is this, what do i have to do to fix it?

fpr= fuel pressure regulator, if its ecu get a second hand one

if your car has a cat then it should have a lambda, i dont personally know where it is but it maybe on the front pipe where the de-cat joins. not to sure aint had one lol

where is the FPR? does my car even have one? my car hasnt got a cat i dont think. ive looked under the car at all the exhaust and i cant see no sensors. i changed a few on saxos and puntos but cant find one on this.

If i get a second hand ECU will i have to have it unlocked as mine has an immobiliser. and whats the chances that my problem is the ECU?

go to the scrappy and see if you can get the car there, then just try one, if it works it works. my 19 has a ren immob and alarm and i can swap ecu,s as ive got 2 chipped and a standard one. all fire up

not to sure on location of fpr but follow your fuel feed back from the tb,

how about revealing what car/engine it is!?..

and your car doesn't have/need a carb, so what it was you exchanged, I don't know..

Renault clio 1.4RT 1993.

the circle bit to the right of the throttle cable. i always believed it to be a carb.. but im no mechanic so...

similar pic of my engne so you get the idea

i53.tinypic.com_2ewl5zl.webp

the bit underneath where the airbox sits. from the single point injector down to the inlet manifold - all been changed

sorry for the confusion.. or my lack of knowledge.

This may be a real long shot here

Have you had any other work done on it lately? Have you tried a compression test on it?

Is the the same engine as I had in Project Persil? The reason I ask is that when we did that engine, it wouldn't idle properly and when we took the cam cover off, we could that see that the valves needed adjusting

havent had any work doing on it as far as i know. but anyway ok i changed the ECU this morning. Started the car and bingo idle fine and started fine.. however took for a drive round the block and everytime i dip the clutch to change gear or come to a junction it drops dramatically and stalls. i try to start back up but wouldnt untill around half our later. ????

the engine doesnt over heat so i wouldnt of thought so. it runs fine untill you drop the clutch to change gear or come to a junction and it just dies and drops revs

na i didnt mean was it getting to hot , i ment oviously as you start it from cold it starts on choke as the water is could but as you start to drive it the water warms and turns the choke off, then hen you pull up at a junction dip the clutch it cuts out , and wont start untill the water has cooled enough for it to repeat the choke process, not saying thats whats wrong , was just a thought.(and before some smart arse says its not a carb it hasnt got a choke you all know what i mean)

so it was fine one day then not the next so you threw money away on 2nd hand crap and expect an easy answer?

Anyway I got bored reading replies and tbh i'm confused, with everything, but i digress.

First thing pull the coolant temp sensor plug off and try again, it will need throttle to start most likely like this but should stay running.
