driving the Vee today, suddenly the engine light started flashing and the engine sounded like it was firing on 5 cylinders.

Engine light then came on all the time and continued firing on 5 cylinders.

Got the car home, - it was about 5 miles. No other warning lights.

Does this sound like a coil failure? I looked at the sticky thread and it certainly sounds like it but no mention of engine warning light.

Thanks

Andrew

thanks, replacement ordered from GSF, 28 quid delivered. Will change it next week, the weather here is pants so i wont be driving it tomorrow anyway!

When i have the cam belt changed next year, i will switch to trophy ones.

the Vee is still putting a big smile on my face every time i go out in it. I dont think i have every enjoyed driving a car as much since i learned to drive in a Mk2 droopsnoot RS2000 - my dad's car that he generously let me learn in as a teenager all those years ago!! Which i repayed him by smacking it head on into a wall....the shame.... [smilie=icon_cry.gif]

Thanks again for the confirm.

I believe the trophy coils were a good option way back when the batches of standard coils had issues.

Since the standard coils were updated there hasn’t been many complaints.

can this problem self heal? Started the car this morning and its firing on all 6. The engine light is still on.

Should the problem raise its head again, i have the stupidest question of the day. How do you release the wiring connection from the coil to check which coil has packed up?

I pulled and poked but couldnt see how the connecting wire releases from the coil.

I would invest in a cheap code reader, it quickens diagnosing which coil and will clear light straightaway, and if it was a coil it will show in dtc menu and pin point which so you can check wiring. The coil will not self heal but probably a faulty connection.
I don’t want to tempt fate but I’ve not had any of the newer coils pack up and I use peugoet oe. If your fault has cleared the engine light should extinguish in upto 50miles.

thanks for the tip on the OBD2 purchase. I have one on order - cost £10.

For my reference, anyone know how the V6 cylinders are numbered, looking at the engine from the rear of the car? I presume they are numbered as per firing order?

I bought an OBD2 reader. After much fun trying to find the OBD2 port (under the ashtray if you are interested), connected it up.

Initial screen said '1 code detected'.

Went to 'read codes' screen and it said 'no codes detected'.

Engine light is still on, started car and it seems to me to be running on all 6.

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Am tempted to erase engine light and carry on driving.....

Was the car cold and weather damp when the coil packed up?
I had a similar experience once and it only seemed to ‘fail’ when the weather was cold and damp. Once the thing had dried out / warmed up back to 6 cylinders
Don’t worry it didn’t last long and packed up completely after a short time and easy to spot with the old pull connector method :approve:
Good luck and fingers crossed

it was, it was chucking it down and i had been driving maybe 2-3 mins. i shall delete the engine light and i have a spare coil now so ready for next time!!
