How to talk the missus around??? Tips please

I hear you on the 8ZF, got it in the M135i and will never ever go back to driving a manual as a main car.

A M135 must be a great motor Colin. I went for the Alpina because I need an estate to get my rugby chair in, as there is no M3 touring the Alpina seemed the route to take. I like the understatedness of it, I have the Alpina stickers on the side but to anyone that knows nothing about cars its just a estate BMW (with 4 big exhaust pipes!)

I would get a muscle car, they all have V8 versions and are fairly cheap and very spacious inside, left hand drive though...

Yeah I won't be able to sell her one of those thats for sure! lol Just found a low milage Rs4 estate for £21k. I think the estate and awd part will help me talk her into it.

Good luck Brett.

Its all to do with perseverance, and being creative with the reasoning (or rationale) behind the purchase...........

I can't get my head around paying that sort of money for what I'd consider as a working car. If I wanted something 'estate like' with some power I'd consider a Nissan Stagea or maybe a legnum for comparatively peanuts money and spend the rest on a Vee or another 'fun' car.
Lucky we're all different!

As much as Dawn will kill me for saying it, our 172 is really the work horse on the drive. I have a VW Transporter for pretty much all my daily motoring needs and although the 172 is a great little car its not that great when we are all together. Also, as much as I'd looooove to throw £20-25k at my Mini or Vee, she's won't be allowed near the keys so they are strictly funded by my toy funds.
Ive pretty much had the same logic over the last few years regarding our family barge Andy. Ive gone from a Saab 95 estate to an awd Volvo V70 which I actually love to bits. Howevever, I'm now officially sick of feeling abit like a peasant everytime we go out as a family! Lol

I used to have a forester sti, that was a cracking family wagon.
Ours was running 330bhp but there are plenty out there around 400.

Also a fan of the passat R36 300bhp 0-60 in 5.6ish

The R36 is a great shout. They are VERY rare though and carry a good premium for it too. I had a mk5 R32 for a very brief time and considering the lack of low down grunt it was very thirsty. I'd rather an extra 2 cylinders and make the thirst worth it lol

We clearly have different thoughts on what makes us feel like peasants.
I'm not a fan of the V70 but I don't see much difference between it and most of the cars you've suggested.
To me they're all luxobarges. Some with a lot more power but all equally bland.

as I said, lucky we have different tastes!

Stick up a pic of your alpine if you have one Ian.
Hardly ever see them around. Love the stickers on them. 8) 8)

Here is a couple in the showroom when I picked it up. The weather has been too crappy to take any more since!

Been trying out a few cars myself last week or so and here's my thoughts that might help :)

C63 - great engine sound but a little dated design compared to E63 I tried - both 2009- newer shape better interior plus had performance pack 557 bhp I think and switchable suspension throttle - c63 didn't and felt basic vs equipment of e63 for little more money

Tried 996 turbo - wife hates it eg rear seats cos when her mum sits in the car she's the front seat passenger not the wife! Plus whilst it was a fast car it wasn't wow just felt stable efficient not edgy or exciting for some reason

Trying some F360s at the weekend but sadly means likely sell my Clio keep my old AMG as the family runaround if we get one

Are you any nearer to deciding what you fancy yet Brett ?

Sort of. It's more the C63 than anything else at the moment purely because it was really the last of the breed so to speak. As much as I love the B7 RS4, it isn't the last of the breed and I don't think its ageing particularly well. However, I do keep finding myself drawn to the VXR8. It's no where near as well equipped inside, actually it's quite basic compared to Mercs finest but it's bigger than the 63, much more reliable and generally easier to maintain with a little one and his car seat in. It also has a similar kind of honesty to it that attracted me to the ph1 vee which I rather like. In general, everything it does, it does rather well. The bonus being it will also burble along totally reliably doing 35mpg which helps me wooo her into the idea. Apart from a few external panels, doesn't cost a million quid to service or fix either.

Get a Sharan or Alhambra on a 51 plate, great for muddy wellies, sticky chocolate fingers, puke and all the rest, no tears will be shed when the head cloth is used as an impromptu canvas by the budding artist. Having had one brand new car redecorated internally on the forecourt before it had even turned a wheel I am always sceptical of small children in cars with any form or residual value
