How much is a reasonable price for new number plates?

Hi all,

Looking to get a new set of number plates made up as the old ones are loooking a bit tired.
Last time I got them made I paid £6 for both with gb badge, now you're probably thinking that's why they're looking worse for wear, it's not, the front has made contact with the ground and the rear a tiny bit of water ingress from drilling mounting holes (shock horror!)

I had a look about and they seem to be twice the cost now, just for plain plates, I've even seen them as much as £32 from halfords! I also asked at the dealers, I go in with work, hoping for a free be as free advertising but they were having none of it , wanted £16 for a pair.

What would you pay? Am I just being tight :ah:

Cost has gone up due to new rules and equipment requirements (just like everything really), but I dont think I pay over a tenner a pair.

I think the thing that pisses me off the most is any and every second hand car dealer out there, near enough first thing they do is make new plates with their name on, which is fine as they are advertising their business, ask them to knock you up a set and it's like you've asked to finger his wife! Oh silly me thinking I could advertise your business for a reasonable cost but £10-15 a plate is a bit much, all they're doing is offsetting the cost of 2-3 cars they've already done which are sitting on the forecourt!

I had the same "agonising" over new plates for my resto. In the end I decided that
I'd get some pressed plates which have a little bit of a retro feel. Okay, so cost goes
up a bit, but they should never need replacing for the reasons you mentioned.

Holy thread bump Batman......

so in my normal timely fashion I actually purchased a single plain rear number plate, it was when I mot’d my car and picked up the service items. It was actually the same place that made my last set I talked about in the first post, being a factors there was no price displayed, the guy went off to make it without actually telling me how much it would be. Enter stage left blonde counter girl, she says she’ll sort paperwork and payment while he makes it. £11.50. I tell her that’s a lot for a number plate and I paid nowhere near that last time, I tell her how much and she said something along the lines of no chance, I then explained it was through a trade account and I’d only popped in this time as I was there. It was met with silence and told she’d already put it through as a walk-in public sale.

It’s not like it’s over a month later and I’m still a bit miffed about it or anything but I still feel like I’d been turned over

Around a tenner a plate is about right. As above a little cheaper trade.
