So far we've got a knackered Radiator, a twisty and knackered alternator bolt thing and lots of cuts and bruises :icon_evil: oh and a lack of faith in putting it back together

I'm totally out of my depth now with 2 snapped studs for the water pump and I'm wayyyy past the poiint of no return

I am a veteran of the snapped studs scenario. ( courtesy of Dave " If i havent cut myself on it then its not Renault " Sibley

Whip out the other bolts , take the water pump off ( it will come off )

Grind the bolts as close to the mating face as possible.

Get a new drill bit , preferably a metal working one. Definatly NO MASONARY BITS , and drill it out. IIRC the diameter is 6mm.

Job Done.

Before you grind them off!
Take the rest out and the pump off, heat up the base of the snapped bolt as much as you can and then get the biggest pair of pliers on it and see if it comes out.
Andy

The pump is off but I've not got access to oxy/acetylene to heat the snapped studs, would be a lot nicer doing it that way though, thanks for the advice though Andy

Mate, if you're asking questions like this at this stage, I can honestly say you're pretty much in the ****, with or without a run-through.

Have you got a torque wrench for starters?

torque wrench, yes :icon_biggrin:

Lack of knowledge and experience, yes :icon_confused:

A month off work with nothing to do, yes :icon_biggrin:

Start jobs that you really shouldn't to fill out those days, YES :icon_redface:

Got a job interview tomorrow and look like you've been bare knuckle fighting all week, yes :icon_rolleyes:

I was just curious if there were any time saving or make it easier idea's knocking around that the Haynes manual forgot to mention

cbr is my brother. I swear you are. Go in blind and learn on the job - its the Renault way ..

Right then ok. Your next task isto take the turbo off by disconnection the two oil pipes at the block, undoing the 2 downpipe bolts after removing the heatshield, and undoing the 4 turbo-manifold nuts.
Then remove the exhaust manifold by undoing the 9 13mm nuts, and the inlet manifold can be unbolted from the head by removing the 8 13mm nuts and pulled over to the side if you take the battery out. Take care not to smash the knock sensor as you unplug it. You dont need to remove it and this saves undoing all the wiring loom etc etc.

I knew you'd have some answers Dave :icon_biggrin: thanks.

Craig Righton had warned me (many, many times during our conversation) about the knock sensor being rather brittle, I'll be wary of that one.

Mr Bond, In my defence I did have a Haynes manual :icon_lol: I like the part where it say's "undo the retaining bolt and adjustment bolt and lift the Alternator clear", nothing about struggling your nuts off for hours, getting a hernia, scraping away a majority of your flesh on one of the many protruding pieces of metal work and swearing profusely whilst pondering why you started this job in the first place. Strange that.

I'm having a day off the car today because:

A) I attended the job interview and got the job if I want it. hoorah!
B) I've got another interview tomorrow and I'm rather conscious of the mess my hands are in.

I should be meeting up with Craig R on Sunday at the Raceway to collect the new HG Kit, hopefully I'll be all sorted by then and ready to recieve the new bits.

You dont need to defend yourself mate - its the blind man here typing you need to be worried about. Its good fun the haynes to see just how different it is in real life compared to the paper based mint brand new model they are working on !

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha (x100,000,000,000)

So you're gonna get the head off, stripped and prepped for resurfacing and into the machine shop, resurfaced, collected, cleaned and scrutinised for swarf, and the block prepped for the new gasket ALL by sunday?

**chuckles**

I Love you man. Optimism is such a thing of beauty.

(Pray your heart out you dont disturb a liner seal)

Let me know when you're ready for stage 2....

Cbr....why have you even tried to remove the water pump if you're just doing the headgasket? Also whats with the missing headlight - its hardly in the way of removing the head is it! LOL!

Water pump was squeaking and I wanted to change it whilst the cam belt was being changed, as for the head light it's got a stone chip in it so needs swapping and your quite right it's not in the way of the head gasket, how vigilant! :icon_lol:

So....how far along are we then?

Pictures, boy, pictures!!

I've been sorting a job out mate, so no time to spend on the car :icon_sad:

I've got some slightly sorter snapped studs now after putting a blow torch on them to remove them and they just snapped a bit smaller :icon_lol:

Inlet is off, Exhaust side isn't, That will be next.

I'm toying with the idea of removing the block completely so that I can clean it up and paint it, not sure about that though and I'm waiting to hear from a friend on whether I can borrow his lifting gear and engine stand.
