As a few people have talked about a walk through for replacing the heater matrix, I have created one. It's not the most straight forward job in the world. This is how I did it.....

1. Remove Top Dash Panel - 5XT20 torx. 3 torx along the top, 2 on the side.
P4060002.webp

2. Remove Speedo/Rev guage cluster & Oil guages (if fitted) - To remove oil guages without snapping clips, gentily leaver the guages up and pull towards you.
P4060003.webp

3. Stereo & Surround - I just removed the whole unit with the stereo still inside (4XT10 torx)
P4060004.webp

4. Heater controls & Clock - Start with the heater controls..Remove the 2XT20 torx, push controls forward, twist 45* and pull out through stereo space.

Note: Be on the look out for a burnt out connector block and/or control unit. I replaced this before refit as number 3 blower setting wasn't operating.

P4060008.webp

5. Remove the center console & slide gear gaitor up the gear stick shaft - Gentily squeeze sides at the base of the gator inwards and lift.
P4060009.webp

6. Remove steering wheel, loosen steering wheel stereo control (if fitted BUT do not remove screw fully) and cowling (steering wheel/column surround)
P4060010.webp

7. Remove indicator stalk & wiper stalk -
P4060012.webp

8. Pedal box cover (under steering wheel with head light adjuster in to view the heater pipe on removal and refit)
P4060013.webp

9. Remove dash nuts at each corner 4X10mm

10. Remove bonnet pull/release 1X10mm bolt

11. Remove steering column dash support 2X20 torx
P4060022.webp

12. Remove top center plastic dash securing clip
P4060017.webp
P4060019.webp

13. Remove 2XT20 torx from stereo ISO socket mounting (at the back of the stereo housing & Remove 2XT20 Torx from under each corner of the stereo housing base
P4060024.webp
P4060038.webp

14. Pull dash forward (more so the passenger side than drivers side
P4060030.webp

13. Drain cooling/water system

14. Remove expansion bottle/header tank

15. Remove heater matrix pipes from heater matrix
P4060031.webp

16. Remove wiper arms
P4060025.webp

17. Remove scuttle panel
P4060026.webp

18. Remove wiper motor & linkage

19. Remove heater blower motor cover and unit
P4060028.webp
P4060029.webp

20. Remove 1X10.. bolt from under heater blower motor (passenger side of the matrix from the scuttle panel area)
P4060037.webp

21. Pull heater unit forward
P4060032.webp

22. Remove 2XPhillips screws/self tappers

23. Pull 4X plastic clips back slightly & Remove heater matrix out of passenger side footwell

brilliant guide!

dedication taking all those pics! :)

personally, I don't mind the matrixese (matrices?) as for once you dont need to crawl around under the car or anything and you don't get too dirty :D

easily get it done in a day - took me a few hours to remove and a few more to refit (having never done one before)

excellent idiot proof write up with pics good work mate, what i need to know is how to flush the heater matrix as my heating has stopped getting warm..its constantly cold so i think maybe the matrix is blocked up

I need to do this myself, i've had a half attempt at doing it but i can get my speedo/rev guage off. It seams to be fixed at the bottom but i can't see any bolts?

hi there mate. If you remove the pedal box cover (as above) there are another 2 T20 torx that secure the speedo guage from under neither. Get a ligt up there and you can just about see them. It will lift up and pull towards you then. Carefully squeeze and pull the speedo cable to release but be careful of the wheel speed sensor on ther top of the cable 8)

Does your temperature guage rise when your driving along to at least the 1/4 of the way up the guage or does it move up the guage when your sat still idling and then drop to next to nothing when your driving? If so that sounds like the thermostat....To flush matrix out, remove the 2 heater matrix pipes in the bulk head and run a high pressure hose into the top one. I wouldnt advise this though as it may blow the matrix and will mean replacing it anyway. Changes are it wont make alot of difference....Check that the heater matrix feed and return pipes are clear aswell. An obvious thing but also check there is water in the header tank

yep water in the header tank and the thermostat is fine..temp gauge sits nicely at 82 degrees

Thanks for that, that'd explain why

So once the header tank is back on etc. do you just top it up?

Top the header tank back up to maximum, replace cap and run engine. Set header controls to hot and setting 1 raise engine speed to around 2500rpm until temp guage moves a little way up the guage. Loosen the bleed screw on the radiator and release any air in the system whilst keeping an eye on your coolant level. Then continue to run engine until cooling fan cuts in. Job done. There are a few ways of bleeding the system...Some prefer to leave header tank cap off, other bleed the system when the engine isnt running etc.

Very good guide, followed this today and had no real problems swapping my matrix over, its really not a massive job to do at all.

Cant beileve renault quote 9 hours to do it, madness!
