Group A Carb for over 200bhp? advice needed

GTTboost

Hi guys, I would like your opinions, I have everything thats important uprated in the engine dept, Full Free flowing zorst, charge cooler, large filter, ported head, uprated fuel pump, alloy rad and sep oil cooler, uprated clutch,T25, so the fueling and cooling are all ok.

I really would like to get over the 200bhp mark, even if its 201bhp without just wacking the boost up and praying. I would like to set up to run high boost reliably with the right fueling.

Also.... will it be impossible without a race cam?

I spoke to a few tuning companies.. Grey Devil and Ktec and both have said that there is no way that it is possible to get over 200bhp without going for one of there group A carbs as the standard venturi will NOT supply enough fuel to get over 200bhp.

Also, what boost would you expect to run to make just over the 200bhp mark? I know its not the be all and end all to have over 200bhp, but its just a personal goal that I dreamt of owning a 5GTT with this much bhp, and why I have spent money making sure the cooling and fueling is up to it before I take it any further, and not just wacking up the boost and flooring it, lol.

The reason I am asking on here is if anyone has over 200bhp without a group A carb? I will go and get this carb if its neccessary.. but not sre it will be cool to when i am not wanting to run high boost and over fuel? (drink like a fish and cost a bomb to run around in).

Please can anyone advise on this? Thanks.

Does anyone else have a Group A carb they can say if they have had any problems with it? or does it over fuel when not on high boost? etc. Thanks :)

can't think of a 200bhp oir even near that on a stock carb.

most need nfiddling to get 160 with the stock venturi etc, then needs a gpa aftert that.

if its set up correctly it won't over fuel off boost

Thanks Chris... my mistake, I should have asked what is the most the standard carb can make after the jets have been replaced with larger ones... without altering the Venturi.

It sounds like it is on the cards for the 'group a' type carb, at least I can give it a go, if its drinking like crazy and not performing well enough I can always go back to the standard venturi carb again (I'll keep the original one incase I want to put it back on later).

Thanks mate ;)

If you want to know whats the fastest renault 5 running a carb which has just been rejetted watch the video

its the one in red. Black one has a 172 turbo lump in it.

As for group A carbs the only use they are is people buy them on eBay for lots of money :S they overfuel, you cant set them up correctly and the standard carb does the job fine.

Thanks Bigfoot!! :) Thats what I wanted to hear... a resounding yes or no... I think its a safe bet it will be a pain and over fueling without being necessary after your post.. Cheers!

I am still surprised the red racer is still using a standard venturi? If I dont want the group a carb, can you tell me is there anything else that needs doing apart from adjusting the air corrector (to a 0.9) and a larger main fuel jet to around 130? 135? (on a T25 turbo upto a max boost of 22psi?)

When your setting up fueling you just stick at the one boost setting, dont keep adjusting it as thats where things go wrong. as you will be over fueling loads when lowering the boost. as for setting up a carb, im not the best person to speak to as im on f7p turbo on mine now :) however will be rebuilding the carb soon on my other 5. Best place is to join up to RTOC there is lots of articles on there, with a very good article on how to set up the carb. If going that high though id recommend getting an AFR as well. They got a continuous group buy on there for the LC-1 a lot cheaper than you can get on eBay, so membership will pay for itself straight away if you do get one. As for also setting up its not just about the main fuel jet, as you would also need to adjust the 1st and 2nd stage jetting.
