Gordini Turbocharger Upgrade?

Tony Smith

I have a standard turbocharger on my 'dini, but it is intercooled. Are there any proven turbo upgrades. Always thought a T25 would work well with the spec and size of the engine (smaller flange I know). Is their a T3 based spec that would give really good throttle response while still having the capability to make 200bhp without using more than 20 psi?

Garrett T2 turbo's were not available when the Gordini turbo was developed/released so you ended up with a small T3.

The same applies to the MG Metro turbo a small T3.

The Renault 5 Turbo/Turbo2 was also fitted with a Garrett T3 turbo, however the housing and wheels sizes are bigger.

The 5 Turbo/Turbo 2 had a 0.36 AR exhaust housing with a 45 trim wheel.
The Gordini Turbo had a 0.24 AR exhaust housing with a 40 trim wheel.

Small T3 as standard, thought a smaller more modern turbo would produce the same top end power with better driveability. I was round 'Ragnotti Drifts' flat earlier for a cuppa , he's working on my 'dini at the moment. Just assumed someone might have tried something already. The turbo on that T2 engine is a bit bigger than I want. Nice though :0).

you want a t3 off an escort rs turbo. the series one type was oil cooled only like the dini, the later watercooled aswell, easy to add on if needed. nice cheap upgrade and with the core rotated near enough straight fit. think it would limit you to 180-190bhp though.

Yes the Escort RS Turbo T3 has the same size exhaust housing and wheel trim as the Renault 5 Turbo however I suspect fitting that turbo will give more lag than a T25.

this is true, even the stock one i found more laggy than a t25. unless you use full efi to help spool it it will always be a trade off, more power and flow = more lag, i did have a chat once about porting the rear and fitting a bigger super light compressor wheel to help things. The gordini did have a 3 piece exhaust so maybe a new collector could be made to hold a more modern T2* frame turbo, which is the better idea i think.

Might be worth speaking to a turbo bof. They can do some great things these days. Stuff like the t22 series give a massive shove but little lag.

Gt17 think its called or t25 of a Saab 93-95. Its worth a look on turbomini website, they use them and they drill and re stud T3 flange
I had one lined up on my old car with pikey re studded manifold extension and it's very similar to Dini t3 but half the size and weight same 3 stud type tapered circle exhaust bolt up,
Think would only need a exhaust front pipe mod to turbo and the bits for that can be bought of the shelf mini guys do it, also bigger version are available as Saab upgrades.
I did put pics on Andrews forum not sure if they around anymore

Ok my pics of the Saab turbo should be on there, I think the gt17 was good for 200hp
Btw I mean the early mini they retap the mg metro manifold.
Tony if you do end up having a look at the Saab turbo which I think were on the 9000 in non gt form,
I tapped and studded my manifold extension ,,put the turbo in place mocked up then found that a slight grind to the mount flange on the Dini extension would of helped to put the back end of turbo more central with wing hole would of helped before I put studs into it to kick turbo backend more to front of car

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll let you know how it goes. Really looking for response over outright power, my last dini made 190 bhp at 17psi and that was more than enough, really struggled to put it down and the clutch and gearbox are marginal by that point.

How about the smaller GTX series then? They're supposed to be very responsive.
