Gordini Turbo misfire - update and question

Hi All,

You may remember my Gordini Turbo has been suffering a misfire that's been difficult to track down. I took the car to my friendly classic car garage. The guy there had lots of "fun" trying to identify the problem! The issue is that it's intermittent, and only really happens when the car is nice and warm.

Anyway, he replaced plugs and leads and re-seated the distributor cap. That seemed to work, then it didn't... So, he found another Renix ignition module, but from a Renault 20. That immediately solved the issue! The misfire was entirely gone.

However, now the problem is that the advance is too great for the G Turbo and I get loads of pre-ignition, but only under significant boost. The advantage of the R20 module is that the car feels loads faster off boost, and accelerates dramatically more quickly with the advance. I want more of that but less of the pre-ignition!

Any thoughts on what I can do? Can I adapt a GT Turbo Renix? Can I get custom ignition that will easily adapt to a Gordini Turbo and can take input from the knock sensor? I'd like to have something that has much more dynamic advance and is able to be tuned to all parameters so it gives more advance when the engine can take it but backs off under higher boost and under knock conditions.

Thanks,

Andrew

if you can find one, use a fuego turbo one.
a gtt one can be used too.

(i had a gtt and used a fuego one once - the fuego connector pattern is the same as the gordini, so i had to do a bit of creative wiring.)

failing that some of the gtt guys on facebook have been talking about this:

Yes - I have fixed the misfire for now. I swapped the coil unit over in my Renix unit with one from a known good module.

I'm very interested in the Nodiz system. I'm just trying to decide how best to trigger it - either from the existing flywheel sensor or from the crankshaft pulley.

The Nodiz should work with the flywheel sensor but I will need to retain the distributor as the flywheel segments are "symmetrical", signalling TDC and BDC. I'd love to do away with the distributor as it can be a source of misfires. However, I am concerned about using the camshaft due to the timing not being so accurate due to chain slop, etc. Nodiz would make me a custom trigger wheel for the camshaft or adapt their software to work with the flywheel sensor. I've even offered to take a look at some of the code myself.

Any thoughts?

Chris from Norwich, had a flywheel made recently to suit his new custom setup, not sure on cost of this maybe expensive,, its a real shame that demand is low for upgrade parts on the Gordini it would be great if there were a purpose made ally or plastic fuel injection inlet manifold available taking left and right hand drive car into consideration as I think the left hookers have a little more space, wish I knew casting trade ,,,, with fuel injection you can run high boost and ignition advance on standard compression without detonation

im sure i came across various companies at the autosport show that can make billet flywheels.
a quick search on google seems to suggest alot of people are now doing them. im sure £250 was mentioned somewhere..... maybe they'll be less now.
could you not use a gtt/ normal 1.4 mk2 r5 crank, with a gt turbo cam gear and timing cover - effectively turning the engine into a single chain design, but allowing a crank/timing pulley to be used next to the bulkhead as the gt turbo timing cover is alot thinner.... abit of bulkhead modification might be needed? ( its been a while since ive looked there) then you wouldnt have to worry about slack chains etc.

us mk1 people are in the same boat as the gtt guys. - no proper efi manifolds (well for the gtt there was a renault alliance from the USA that was a 1.4 and ran fuel injection - but even that is a crap design and very very rare!) most seem to run log manifolds - which appear to be fairly easily made. - IF you know an aluminium welder.....

Hi Guys,

I'm pretty certain I'm going to go for the Nodiz Pro:

http://nodiz.co.uk/

But I'm going to time from the camshaft. The research I've done suggests I should be ok. Time will tell! I've also considered the Megasquirt ignition only but it's a bit difficult to understand and much as I'd love to build my own (I am competent with a soldering iron), I don't have much time right now. I may go with the Nodiz for now and do a Megasquirt later. The Nodiz guy is going to do me a custom trigger wheel mounted to a spare camshaft pulley. He will also alter the code for me to trigger off it as it will be running at half engine speed.

For fuel injection, I've often wondered if the monopoint injection from a clio would work??
