5 Mk I incl Gordini Gordini Rear trailing arm help Needed

STEVE G

Hi all its quiz time...
I have a pair of gordini rear trailing arms which I have started to re-con but I have some questions.
Firstly are the stub axles the same for both discs and drums?
Are the torsion bar holders ( the cast ones on the rear trailing arms ) supposed to be different left and right?
In the Haynes bible it mentions that there are two different camber angles for the rear trailing arms and not to mix them up, but it doesn't say how to tell the difference, can any body help ?
What is the best way to remove the cast trailing arm mounting bracket ?
Are the rear trailing arm bushes still aviailable?
Does anyone know the thickness of the rear torsion bars and anti roll bar?
Thanks in advance
Steve

Some answers for your questions,

Yes they are the same for discs and drums.
Are the torsion bar holders ( the cast ones on the rear trailing arms ) supposed to be different left and right?
Yes they are, you will also notice one arm is shorter then the other. As the the torsion bars sit next to each other not inline.
In the Haynes bible it mentions that there are two different camber angles for the rear trailing arms and not to mix them up, but it doesn't say how to tell the difference, can any body help ?
You are just best off measuring the camber when on the car, The TS racecar guys just used to use a big bar on the stub axle and twist them to the desired amount of camber.
What is the best way to remove the cast trailing arm mounting bracket ?
Burn out the rubber bush then cut through the inner / outter sleeves with a hacksaw. Then press new bush on.
Are the rear trailing arm bushes still aviailable?
Bushes are available from France. Try Mecaparts.
Does anyone know the thickness of the rear torsion bars and anti roll bar?
Its in the Haynes manual,
but Turbos / R4 Vans have the thickest ones
then N/A gordini's
then everything else.

Yo... Great question, a few years ago I changed the 2 pairs of bushes on the rear of the mighty TS. It was worth the effort.
A big thanks to Andrew from R5 Gordini .co.uk as it was then.
Since I have changed the rear bearings many times . Usually after a couple of track days....
And well worth having a spare set in the garage.....
Spot the rear wheel camber in the pic at Mallory.......

IMG_20141220_183455.webp I was so pleased to have a remade set they were a massive improvement over the perished originals . And put the car back on track........Exactly how hard they were i couldn't say but 82 ,maybe , or less , I do know that Mark Fish can make them out of polyurethane, at 71 bhp.... It's not a track day Porsche killer.... Unfortunately.....but it is a massive grin factor, and is equally as slow in the dry as the wet.....:ag:......
