Gearbox leak

Guest

I had to have the drivers side driveshaft removed from my williams gearbox by a garage. They used (a lot of) heat and tried to use an extractor to pull the shaft off the spline on the gearbox but it was just stuck on too hard, so in the end it had to be chopped off.

The garage advised to replace the diff seal on the gearbox as the heat would have damaged the old one. After all, they're just tough rubber.

So, i got a replacement seal, ripped the old seal out, and gently tapped the new seal into place as far as it would go.

Unfortunately though, since filling up the box with oil, it's leaking slightly from this seal.

I don't understand why though. I was told that all you need to do to fit the seal is to gently tap it into place which is exactly what i have done.

Any ideas?

It's also leaking the other side but thats my fault.

is there only one size..is the shaft one...did you oil the seal and did the spring stay on..

There's two sizes, one was a lot smaller. I compared the old vs new seal and they were the same size.

I used some washing up liquid around the edge to help it go on as that's all i had to hand as it was a tight fit. Spring was on when i put it on and i tapped it on so can't imagine the spring coming off?

apply a little oil between seal and shaft and let it bed in mate..

Do i need to take the seal off to do that?

I'm not 100% where the leak is coming from, i just saw it was wet on the bottom of the casing where the spline comes out. Think it may be the outer edge which is leaking? Could be wrong.

Might need to drain gearbox oil anyway as the passenger side shaft is leaking but the bolts are tight :( So looks like i've got to re-do that.
